Red Orchestra

This is a sweet game! I played it a couple days ago... its almost like Call of Duty except its a mod. I suck with the regular guns, probably cause it was my first time using that realistic aiming method on a PC, but I am a really good sniper. :)

I don't have DoD...but here is a post from another BB I go to that might tell a bit..

Does it have the legs?

I don't know. I honestly don't. It certainly has the potential to, and on the basis of the games I played last night against Bots it certainly deserves to. One of the big things that DoD and CS had was the half-life engine. It was readily available, and moddable, reliable and light on resources. DoD and CS have filled a niche for those looking for small scale "realistic" combat (and I use the word realistic very very loosely) for the WWII and Counter-Terrorism arenas. Their strength is in their simplicity. Where the likes of Navy Seals lost out is that they tried too hard to be clever and ended up with a skills-based system that really didn't add much to the game.

If you are looking for an alternative to CS I recommend the QIII mod True Combat. It takes the simplicity of CS but strips out the requirement to earn money and adds a few elements of realism - iron sights, fatigue, bandaging and free climbing on a few good maps that makes it a lot of fun without adding complication. The advent of steam has brought a lot of people back to CS and in the process they have overlooked gems like this one that perhaps offer a better gaming experience!

In terms of being a DoD beater Red Orchestra certainly once again has the potential. There is no denying the beauty of the UT2K3 engine, but we are at another crossroads in terms of user base. DoD and CS were both effectively "first - to - market" and thus enjoy premier status and were able to make use of the massive installed HL base. It is difficult to see how something like Red Orchestra could realistically compete with DoD unless people are very vocal about it and start talking.

When you compare DoD with the absence of anything before it then it seems impressive, but weaning people away from their dependance on the half-life engine is going to be a very difficult task indeed....

In summary, does Red Orchestra deserve to take DoD's crown? On the strength of the game last night I would say "yes". *Will* it? That depends very much on people like us who are willing to try and promote new mods. Sadly I think the answer is no - too many people are comfortable with DoD and don't want to change.

-------------

Addendum:

Incidentally I practice what I preach on this one. I play True Combat three times a week after my OpFlash/Planetside/IL2 games and I always intend to pop on for half an hour or so. I always end up spending two or three hours, and it's only when no-one is playing it that I am forced to go to CS which I now find very drab and boring by comparison.

no 2004 isn't out yet...but is supposed to be very soon...

and the aiming is a bit different.... ironsights is what it is called...takes a bit of getting used to it....

supposed to be more realistic..

hit the middle mouse button or the letter "I" on your keyboard will bring up the sights...
