Tal Posted October 15, 2003 Posted October 15, 2003 Hi folks! I got his idea to speed up my xp computer and i found your excellent Windows XP Services removal guide page with a web search. I took a restore point of course, and then went ahead and implemented most of the suggestions (except the ones it says to leave if you are on 56k dial-up, 'cos unfortunately i am!) <_< At first I was so pleased, but then I noticed IE6 took so much longer to get started, and my dial-up connection box wasn't appearing by default like it used to, and I had to put my password in again too. I share my computer with another person, so rather than upset them ( ) I just went with the system restore point and put everything back the way it was. Sorry if this is old hat or whatever, but can anyone shed light? I'd like to implement some of these changes, (as many as possible really,) but which ones make IE slow to start, and is there maybe a reg alteration that would fix that? The list is a great idea, I'd be interested to hear the views/experiences of others with it. The link to a discussion of the page on the forum doesn't work though! O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 After every install I disable all unnecessary services, startups and a number of other things. But IMO IE sucks. I would suggest using Netscape 7.1 and/or Firebird;I use both
Tal Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 Hi again! Thanks for your responses and thoughts. I've been taking it slow, been disabling services one at a time and trying things out before deciding to 'stick'. I have 256mb of ram, but i really do find disabling certain services makes a difference to speed, particularly booting up, (maybe it's 'cos I have what is now apparently considered a slow cpu, it's a celeron 1300, poor old me!) IE probably does suck, but i'm just so used to it now i can't be bothered to change Anyway cheers fellas, thanks for your help!
