zkissane Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 I've decided that I'm going to upgrade to the 165 (if this damn business trip will ever end ). I've read about the good steppings, but the sites that I've poked around on haven't let you pick them (I've looked at about 4 or 5 of the ones for the USA in the sticky in this forum). Normally I've just Newegg'd this kind of stuff. Are there stores that ship to the USA that let you pick steppings? Also, one comment I read on the Egg said that he thinks they have or are going to "lock out" (or something like that) this processor so it overclocks poorly; and that he got one that didn't budge. Now, I know overclocking is all about the quality of your hardware, and I don't know what he had, but is there any truth to the rumors of "impending doom" for this processor? arklab Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 ... one comment I read on the Egg said that ... Not really a great source for any information, esp. negative. When someone gives step by step advice, states it works for them, and is generally positive - maybe he has something. Sounds like this guy with the "overclock lock" was: 1) Using an ECS motherboard 2) With an Intel 487P chipset. That does make for much harder Opteron overclocks. It was probably real hard to hammer it into the socket, too. (And he's wondering just what that funny little arm at the side of the socket is for?) Consider the source. dhopper Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Head on over to flickerdown, http://www.flickerdown.com Dave has the Opteron 165 CCB1E 0606 VPMW in stock. You get to choose your stepping, but you have to pay a little extra, $350 to be exact. It's a great price considering you know what you're getting and you are getting one of the best steppings available.
Guest Kobalt Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 While you can't pick the stepping at Monarch, it is only $271. I posted the coupon codes in another thread.
