andrusk Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 Ive got a problem i think you guys might be able to help with. Heres the deal. I think its a power supply problem but i cant be sure. I have the following pluged into my 420w power supply. 4 case fans 2 cd drives 1 hard drive 1 floppy 1 9700 pro 1 motherboard 3 sticks of ddr 3200 ram 1 athlon xp oced at 2161 with a vcore of 1.65 Im not quite sure what that adds up to in wattage but i will try to explain my problem anyway. I have been recently trying to install a cold cathode and another hard drive in my case. Here is the problem. Whenever i plug another device into my power cables i get a message on the screen saying the power cable for the 9700 pro is not connected and to check the user manual for proper installation insctructions. Then when i unplug it, it takes a couple of reboots to get the message to go away. I have never had this message before and it pisses me off. The way i see it, a 420w power supply should be able to handle all that. So it makes me kind of wonder if its the 9700 pro and not the power supply... I dont know guys, im getting really desperate. Im thinking of just going out and buying a different power supply to see if it at least makes a difference. What do you guys think? Do ya think its the power supply, or the 9700 pro, or something else? Please any comments or help at all are very greatly appreciated. sykocus Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 i had a 350w psu that ran my 4 hds, a couple fans, 4 ccfl and other things, i wouldn't think that your psu would be overloaded. i did try adding a 5th hd and 2nd cd rom and the computer simply refused to boot. LobbDogg Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 Sometimes trial and error is a good troubleshooting guide. I wouldn't assume the PSU is overloaded, however, is it giving out enough power(like maybe the PSU is going bad). Maybe check the voltages on the connectors and whatnot. O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 Can the 9700 Pro run w/o a cable from the PSU, I think it can but the clock/memory speeds would be slower. Try to connect all of your case fans to one psu connector then one cd drive and hd to another then your video card to its own. I had a problem similar to yours, one of my cdrom drives would reboot my comp after trying to access a disk. I just attached the drive to its own psu connector and all of my fans to there own (as stated above) then the problem was fixed. andrusk Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 No it wont run without a cable connected no matter what. I highly doubt anything would be wrong with the 9700 pro, Im thinking the power suppy could be going bad. Also, the 9700 pro is already the only thing plugged into one chain of connectors. I have all the cd drives and hd drives on different connectors. Also, how could i check to see if the volts and stuff like that were right to see wether its dying or not. Thanks for you help guys. LobbDogg Posted October 13, 2003 Posted October 13, 2003 Grab yourself a multimeter, and then check to see if you are getting proper voltages to each color of wire, Yellow = 12 v , Red = 5 v, etc.
andrusk Posted October 13, 2003 Posted October 13, 2003 (edited) Crap! I dont have a multimeter! Ug, im already strapped for cash as it is. Is that info something that motherboard monitor would tell me? Is this pic what your talking about? If so, i think im screwed! AYoKoNA Posted October 13, 2003 Posted October 13, 2003 well your 3.3 rail and +5 rail is a little low. I would suggest a better psu.

sykocus Posted October 13, 2003 Posted October 13, 2003 A solid PSU is diffenatly recomened but, doing the math everything is within 2% or so where it should be, even a name brand one is only made to fall within 5% variance.
