Wierd Crossfire Issue

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone can suggest anything here but I have been having issues with Crossfire and 3dMark 05 and 06.

I can Prime, SuperPi and memtest86 stable, I have no problems running any of the tests in 05 or 06 except Canyon Flight in both. For some reason it gets about half way through and starts to stutter then starts to artifact real bad right until the end. (It starts when the creature comes out of the water at the rear, when the rockets get activated and stops right before the end of the clip)

This only happens when crossfire is enabled, I have tested both the Crossfire Edition and the X1900XTX individually and neither have a problem by themselves.

I thought maybe I was pushing things too hard so I backed everything down to default mobo levels (200 HTT) and it still does it when crossfire is enabled.

Could I possibly have a bad card??

One thing I would like to point out is I have noticed that the Crossfire cable (dongle) seems to have issues and might be the cause of my problems if it isnt "hanging" a certain way I only get "Yellow" colors to everything.

Real Gaming tests doesnt seem to have a problem, at least the ones I tested (BF2, CS:S) I do want to test (FEAR and GRAW) to see if I run into problems with those.

The Vidcards are still running stock speeds but I do have the following set in BIOS

Link GFX1: x16

Link GFX2 x16

Payload GFX: 64

Payload SB: 64

Lane Rev GFX1: Disabled

Lane Rev GFX2: Disabled

Powerdown GFX: Enabled

Powerdown GPP: Enabled

Hide PCIe: Enable

Delay GFX: 0

Delay GPP: 0

GFX0 Power limit: 130

GFX1 Power Limit: 130

GPP Power Limit: 25

GFX workaround: Enabled

TXCLK Gating: Enabled

P2P write between: Enabled

PCIe common clock: Enabled

ASPM L1 GFX: Disabled

GPP: Disabled

SB: Enabled

10% Extra Current GFX1: Enabled

GFX2: Enabled

GPP: Disabled

SB: Disabled

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

PS I have tried both Cat6.3's and Cat6.5's and they both do the same thing however it seems things are slightly better with the 6.5's.

OK, I completely disconnected the dongle and reconnected (mine also requires a small screwdriver and can only be installed one way, so I know that isnt the issue) I also changed the one setting in bios that was wrong (not even sure how that got enabled)

After going back in I can now run 05 Canyon Flight without any problems (crossfire enabled)? But 06 still gives me corruption at the same spot as before with crossfire running, but is fine without crossfire.

Correct me if I am wrong but in 06, Canyon Flight tests SM3.0 and I believe so does Deep Freeze so if it was a card issue I should see problems with both of those tests and I only see it with the one.

I assume that with crossfire disabled it is only using the Master Card, so I am going to test it one more time running only off the x1900xtx.

Thanks again for the assistance!

you MIGHT (and I cannot confirm this at all) have a problem with the fact that you are using an XTX and a Crossfire Master (since the Master is really only an X1900XT, not XTX)

now...that is probably stupid and wrong of me to even say, but I'm very new to Crossfire myself so I am not ruling out any possibilities (it is like when engineers go to elementary schools and talk to little kids...they get killer ideas because kids are not constrained by 'rules' and 'laws' of physics and electricity etc so they always think outside the box, while engineers are bound by rules and laws and so might not think of something killer lol)

*ahem*

have you tried the AMD dual-core patch? (there's a new one out...it's in the Software section stuck to the top)

have you done this also:

XTX and XT master is not problem, probably though slave have shared IRQ with something else and thats not a good thing, would be better to pull off slave card, run PC without it and then try slave card again, if it takes different IRQ.

Its good to check crossfire guide made by Mike with some additions from other crossfire users

great link spajdr, saved it as a favorite to give it a read or link others to it

I seriously doubt IRQ's are the problem as I've setup both the RDX200 and this new CFX3200-DR board about 50 times in the last 2 weeks...and I've never encountered any IRQ issues on either board with Crossfire, and that includes with an Audigy2ZS in both rigs (notorious for stealing your good juju-mojo).

IRQ's are a thing of the past in today's modern motherboards and BIOSes along with Windows XP's ability to assign IRQ's and keep them from conflicting. Gone are teh days of fighting IRQ conflicts.

If you DO have an IRQ conflict, you can almost guarantee that it has something to do with a system instability or conflict with a piece of hardware (but not an actual IRQ conflict...the IRQ conflict is generated by the hardware conflict of incorrect setting or instability).

also, you would note an IRQ conflict instantly in the Device Manager, and none of your other programs would run correctly at all that required all of the features the X1900 cards support.

The hardest part is that other games do not seem to have a problem, and even 05/06 only has the problem in one particular test...

Delay GFX: 0

Delay GPP: 0

GFX0 Power limit: 130

GFX1 Power Limit: 130

GPP Power Limit: 25

These options do not appear on my BIOS. I assume these are components of a newer BIOS? I forget - where do I look to find my BIOS version? Does anyone have a bomber BIOS update method? I've looked at the sticky, but it appears to have problems. It is the best option?

I just download the 5/23/2006 beta from the dfi download site, and then make the floppy (use the Diamond Flash Image)

I just put the floppy I made from the image into the CFX3200-DR, booted to it, let it do it's thing, rebooted, go right into bios, Load Optimized Defaults, save & exit, and then blammo return to the bios and set it all up how you like

I think Rgone's sticky...is a bit over-alarming as I never had these kinds of problems flashing this board at all

Well .. once my slave card got shared IRQ with SATA ULI RAID and network card, and i got frequent disconnects when running world of warcraft, removed slave, disabled network card, changed some option in bios to reset IRQ (not sure whats that option is called) :D and it was ok. Im just referring to MikeMK on guru3D, he got this weird problem in 3D Mark 06 too and it was because of his Creative Xfi shared IRQ with slave card.

I'll try it tomorrow and report back. Must...have...sleep.

Do you think not having the new BIOS update could keep me from enabling XFire?

Thanks for your help.
