They were designed to work with a sub, so they don't have much bass in their own right. On the other hand, they do have something that's missing in a lot of speakers today - midrange! After 3 years of listening to them they still amaze me!

This is a good thing. :) Bookshelf speakers shouldn't have bass. They try and fail due to small cabinet size, there's no bass to be had unless you have a large driver to a large enclosure. They'll have a boost at 100 hz, a boost at 80, that makes it impossible to blend it with even a linear subwoofer. The m2is are good to about 90 hz, any sub/receiver crossover should be fine for that.

I like the Avia disk a lot. It's very easy to use the first time and even easier once you know how to read the test images.

I can get just about any display within a couple of percent of the guys with serious test equipment. More importantly, I can setup the display just like the user prefers.

I don't care for guys that insist the display must be set a certain way. If you like it dark, light, sharp or fuzzy, that's all that matters to you if you're satisfied with the setup.

After my recent move I ran my Hitachi for a couple of weeks then checked it with the Avia disk again. There were no settings out of spec for my preferred adjustment.

The most critical setting are the Color Level and the Black Level. After that it's just a matter of taste. One buddy likes a softer edge to the image while another wants things razor sharp.

Thanks for the info. One other question: do you need to calibrate every input?

input 1 for dvd

input 2 for dish

input 3 for xbox

input 4 for pc, etc.

And can you save them? I am hoping that you can but not really sure. Is it more of a tv capability?

I have a 61" Infocus (Thanks, Woot!) with a Denon surround sound driving a Sony sub and speakers (nothing too fancy there, but good quality). My fiancee hates that she can hear -all- the background noise when watching CSI:NY cause some of the clanking sounds in the autopsy area can be distracting. Rain also tends to make you feel like you're outside and, on several occasions, I've wondered what "that" sound is only to realize it's the TV.

I like the media centers that you guys have with the HTPCs. How do you get your video cards to display without cutting off the image? I used to play EQ2 on the big screen and it would chop all sides even with the resolution set to match the native display on the screen (61md10).

I used a program called powerstrip to compensate for overscan.

This is supposedly 1080p, but to show 100% of the image, I used 1824x1020 progressive, it's the computer screen now.

All TVs overscan a bit, and all cameramen make sure nothing important is in that 50-70 pixels anyway.

@Kilamon

My Hitachi has an "Aspect Adj." button on the remote. If the output from the PC gets off, I simply hit the "Aspect Adj." and it centers it right up.

@ooztuncer

I would "calibrate" every input that your DVD player can use. On mine I did the DVI/HDMI, and Component inputs. These are the only two HD sources that I use. I didn't bother with the SVideo output.

The biggest point is to get the TV as close to optimum then tweak for your tastes.

Using the Avia source you'll probably find that your display is not setup properly. Most displays come out of the box setup for the WOW factor not accurate reproduction.

All too true, now that I listen with that in mind... other elements than the components need work, though.

Blatant AV envy... :P

A pic of my system. I wasn't able to get the SVS subwoofers in the shot. The surround and rear channel speakers are from Paradigm also.

SVS kicks butt. Box sub or tube? Dual or single woofer? Normal series, plus series, or ultra?

I had a HSU myself, HSU and SVS always seemed to be a batman vs superman thing at the time, and I found a good ebay deal on the STF-2 on ebay.

I don't recognize those Paradigms - are they older?

Are those RC helicopters? Don’t happen to have a camera in that big one, do you? That has to be an expensive hobby.
