MrBurns Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I have Win98SE and the folowing problem: Since the last time I booted Windows in safe mode, Explorer always changes the Desktop-icon-layout back to the version it uses in safe mode. It does this on every reboot and also sometimes when Windows is running whe Explorer is closed (and restarted) w/ an error message. I always restore the layout w/ the program 12Ghosts Save Layout, but I have to do it at least once in every hour, which is very annoying. Can anybody help me? tia Screenshots (the upper is how it should look and the lower is how it looks after each reboot):
andrusk Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 What i cant believe is how you would want you desktop to look lilke either of those Anyway, have you tried right clicking on the desktop, goint to arrange icons by, then unchecking auto arrange and align to grid? Try that, if it doesnt work, take two orginizational pills and call me in the morning.
AYoKoNA Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I didn't think 98 had align to grid or auto arrange <_< Maybe i just forgot
andrusk Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Well it might not have align to grid. But i know it had auto arrange. Auto arrange has been around since windows 95 i think.

bigred Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 HOLY CRAP ON TOAST! you know they have this thing called the start bar in windows (even in linux too). you can create custom folders (groups of similar programs) on the bar. it works wonders for things like that. talk about taxing the system without doing anything... poor video card

You the fudgin startmenu-programs for gods sake. Anything you don't use on a weekly basis, i'd say has no point on the desktop. also, what's the point of utilizing the quick bar if you have the same icons on the desktop???? that's stupid. delete the desktop icons. bigred Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 upon further thought it's possible that your registry is toast from A: too much crap and B: too much crap for windows 98. 98's registry was okay, but not meant to take a total beating like that's giving it. can you honestly remember where everything is at? cuz I doubt windows can either with that much stuff. MrBurns Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 (edited) I have already disabled the auto alignment. @andrusk: There is also a option to align to grid, but I never use it. I have found a program that worked! It is a program from PC Magazin and is called Win Tidy. It can be downloaded here , but you need a subscription download this. If you need the program, I could mail it to you. It is 751kB big as .zip file. It has a auto restore, which restores the icon layout everytime the program starts and it also has a "smart restore", which automatically restores the layout when Explorer is closed or the resolution is changed. @bigred: I dont remember, where everything is, only where the most important icons are. For all other icons I dont need more than a few seconds to find them. bigred Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 (edited) you are aware that you're hurting your system performance with all that "crap" on the desktop right? cuz windows has to keep all that in the not only the registry, but cached into ram. considering you have 512mb of system ram, and windows 98, you basically have 256mb of usable ram (it only caches 256mb of your ram... thus the rest is totally useless to it). at the same time you're going to install yet another TSR to sit there and bog things down further. you have another thread about your poor scores in 3dmark... this is one of those reasons for it. just get 2k / xp pro, move this stuff to the start bar, and call it a day.
