howie b Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 (edited) I think I've become a victim of this phenomenon commonly known as Sudden BIOS Death. Okay, so I've had my A7N8X Deluxe Revision 2.0 since the end of August. Paired with a Barton 2500+ & 512 MB 400DDR Corsair XMS (the "usual" setup), I've been OC'ing the hell out of this thing. I haven't run into any problems, and I tweaked everything imaginable on that bad boy. I installed a new SK-7 yesterday to replace my sh8tty Volcano 11+ HS (kept the Smartfan II), installed it correctly, booted up an at POST my CPU reported at 1150 Mhz. This had happened quite regularly (for some random reason sometimes it resets my CPU back to 100 x 11.5), and as normal to fix it, i just went back into the BIOS and restored my settings to their normal condition, and clicked "save & exit". It started saving my conditions, and as I held my breath during the BIOS saving (as i always do...it's very gut wrenching) I got the unwelcomed suprise...everything powered down and no reboot. Uh oh. I restarted...black screen, no BIOS, no POST, nothing. Unplugged comp, cleared CMOS, plugged in & turned on. Black screen. I filled out an RMA request with Newegg, and before I send it out, does this sound familiar to anyone? Is this SBD like I think it is? Is there anything I can do that I have not tried? Any help would be drastically appreciated!! Thanx, JHB *ADDED* I forgot to mention, when I said I changed my CPU speed, I did not set it back to the default 166 x 11, i set it to 200 x 10, which was always easily doable for me on this pairing (I run it at 195 x 11.5 constantly). I don't know if this could have affected anything. Thanks again. Edited October 10, 2003 by howie b

AYoKoNA Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Yea andrusk had the same problem, but he didn't have ver 2.0. I thought the new version wasn't supposed to have sudden bios death. Ouch sorry bro.

bigred Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I have to ask, but where did the term Sudden BIOS Death come from? from a technical point of view it doesn't seem like the bios would be the issue. more than likely it would be a voltage regulator, capacitor, or something along those lines that was blown away. I'm just not sure how the bios could suddenly go dead. it's not like you were flashing the thing. you made a simple update, it saved, it won't boot up. just doesn't make sense to blame the bios. Guest Trios Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Don't RMA to newegg, RMA it straight to Asus. I've heard of people who have had beautiful experiences with Asus RMAs. Trios
bigred Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I'd agree on that one. asus always takes care of people in a timely fashion. unlike some other mobo makeres that start with an A who shall remian nameless at this time. AYoKoNA Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Abit? Where do you send it to Taiwan? <_<
bigred Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I've rma'd a total of 11 boards to them. I think they blacklisted me after the first 6 bp6's (yes I had that many of them that were either doa or didn't make it a week!). never had good experience with them. Asus... I KILLED the mobo, not something they did. I screwed up and pushed the fsb way too high on it. infact the cpu was still attached to the mobo (it died too incase you couldn't guess), yet they appoligized for it and sent me a new mobo. howie b Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 really, so you think i would be better off rma'ing it to newegg? Also, how long did it usually take to get it back from ASUS cuz i can't wait around forever and newegg is here on the west coast, and they process RMA's in 2-3 days (from what it says on the site). If i'd be better off RMA'ing directly to ASUS, and it wont take forever, please let me know??!! JHB
bigred Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 asus you're looking at 2-3 weeks unfortunately. however they have a habbit of replacing with newer models when availible. which I don't think is the case with yours
