shmoe010 Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Okay so I was running 3dmark06, just chuggin' along, and it froze up on the last leg. No response whatsoever. So I rebooted, i got through post, windows spash, and it's all dark. The card doesn't feel hot, but I wouldn't know because i can't get into windows for speedfan or anything... this isn't the first time it's frozen up when under heavy load but it is the first time windows hasn't shown my password screen. Anyone know a fix or is it RMA?
Sorrento Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Have you tried Safe Mode? Maybe the system freezing damaged the driver installation and you will have to uninstall them thru Safe Mode and reinstall them again. To make you feel better: if you can see the DFI boot screen, the DOS text, and the Windows booting logo... 99% chances the card is in perfect shape and the problem is just a driver issue. If something was damaged (gpu or ram) then you would inmediately see artifacts upon boot at the already mentioned screens. Good luck. shmoe010 Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Safe mode freezes up after the DOS text finishes coming up... and I thought that the other screens (dos and windows splash) were generated by on-board video? Please correct me if I don't know what i'm talking about, because I seriously want to get this under control. the vid card was $300, and if it can't handle 3dmark i've got a problem
Sorrento Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Well last year my Leadtek 6800GT went bad all of the sudden, and that time the boot screen and dos text showed artifacts. Those are generated by the video card btw. Perhaps the problem has nothing to do with your 7900gt but with your HDD, or the Windows installation to be more precise. I would suggest checking it with the repair console CHKDSK: using Windows XP CD, booting and then selecting R on one of the first screens (R instead of Install). ronin688 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Well I don't have a specific answer to your problem, but there is a similarity between your problem and the problems that a LOT Of us 7900 series owners are having. The fact that it froze on the "Deep Freeze" test is what links it in with the other problems, I'd look into the EVGA 7 series forum just to see basically every post filled with 7900 complaints. (Myself included) I've replaced my original card and the replacement worked fine for 2-3 days and then showed the same problems of the first. The failure during the last test of 3DMark06 is a common thread among them. Seems like anything with HDR or SM3.0 has significant trouble. The EVGA techs are now telling people that you need a minimum 22A PER RAIL to run the card properly, and people are pretty upset. I haven't yet heard of anyone having your specific issue, but it does seem connected. Is it possible that the crash corrupted your windows install? iamkoza Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 EVGA techs are now telling people that you need a minimum 22A PER RAIL to run the card properly, and people are pretty upset? they are going to have to package these things with a psu included
shmoe010 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I guess PSU would make sense... i don't know i mean call me a n00b but if a psu has an SLI sticker and is in excess of 500watts i think it's a little ridiculous to think that it can't handle a single video card. Actually what I found was when I moved my hdd to a different SATA slot it booted right up... and it's the second time i've done that. The vid card is probably fine, according to speedfan my hdd is on fire 24/7 despite heatsink and multiple fans...

My 6800GT (agp btw) didn't had just tinny particles... those were vertical stripes and all the colors were wrong, even in the DOS text screen. The GPU or RAM chips were toasted, and I didn't even overclocked it or actually use it for more than 4 days; Leadtek had a big problem with a batch of those things. Btw shmoe010 just noticed the PSU you say you are using in your signature, and like bigr5026 said it is not a good choice of psu to use on a DFI mobo. I have a Rosewill 550w with an Abit NF7-S v2.0 working day and night, and for the 2600+ Mobile is quite more than enough... but the 939 A64's, and the DFI mobo are something entirely diferent. shmoe010 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Wish I'd have known that 3 weeks ago... eh live and learn. I'm building my friend a new rig next month and he knows nothing, so maybe I'll swap it out and have him buy me a Fortron 700w or something... lolz
Guest YuKoN Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 check specs before buying another psu- make sure that the replacement is rated at temperature, and not cold. there are only 3 manufacturers(that I know of) that rate their psu's at running temp- OCZ, PCP&C, or SinTek. I also believe that all of those have adjustable rails, and are rated for peak output of 100 watts or more above their advertised wattage. i.e. OCZ 520 psu rated for 620 peak @ 40-50C. not sure about exact spec, just an example. Most here swear by the OCZ and PCP&C, and they are excellent psu's, with good warranties and tech support. Better to have the extra power and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it. IMHO- and as for your card- I've seen a few problems due to a number of reasons. First- I'd flash to the 14.04 bios if you don't already have it. I've tried a couple of other versions with no luck, stick with the 14.04, if you need it I can email it to you. Second, use only the WHQL 84.21 forceware release drivers from nvidia website. I've also tried a few others, and they are not so good either. Good luck- and I hope you don't have to rma.
