Opinions on shrouds needed Do you use a shroud on your rad./cores?

I can only pass along info I learned years ago working on my car. Shrouds allow the fan to pull air through the radiator. Without a shroud, air is pulled from around the radiator instead. I think the optimum mounting was parallel with the shroud opening.

If you aren't using a fan to pull air through the radiator, I doubt a shroud would be needed.

CPDMF I'm upgrading my other rig swaping out heater core with Black Ice pro II dual 120mm Radiator and getting rid of the 120 x 120 x 38 fans for 120x120x25.4

The difference in thickness and no shroud would allow me to have rad and fans inside the case with grille on the outside top of the case. If I keep the shroud I have to have fans mounted on the outside of the case top. With the fans in a pulling configuration just how bad will it be? as far as performance.

I use 4 fans on my rad in push pull config. works well depending on ambient i idle anywhere from 18-22C on the processor and usually stay constant 35-36C on vid.

no shroud needed on that rad when the fans are bolted to it,as there are no gaps

between the side rails of the rad and outer frame of the fans.the fans butt together also.

i have the same one,pic in sig.temps never go over 27C @ idle and 30C @ full load

a closer pic

i could see a should eliminating some turbulence/noise.

The difference in temps without a shroud would hardly be noticeable. Looking good is just as important as working good.

try it both ways and see..........

a shroud is supposed to be a little better for the "dead spot" thing

sealing the fans against the rad is just as important I use pipe wrap insulation tape from home depot

I've been thinking about mounting the rad on the inside floor of the case with the fans between the case floor and rad intaking air from outside of case and pushing through rad. I have 1" of clearance between the top of the desk and the bottom of the case. Would that be enough space for the fans to work properly, would they be able to get enough air with the 1" clearance?

Fans are 2 x 120mm SilenX Xtremas 58CFM on controller

Black Ice Pro II Rad.

MCP655 pump

DD Filport

CPU cooling only
