Problems loading updated ForceWare.

Recommended Posts

This is driving me nuts. I'm trying to update my Forceware drivers, but every time I do I get a BSOD.

I go to Add/Remove Programs and choose "Uninstall all nVidia drivers, except display". Then I boot to Safe Mode and run Driver Cleaner on the nVidia drivers. Next I reboot the computer and when it autodetects I cancel them out. I open the Forceware setup and let it do its thing. Look in the Device Manager to see that all yellow question marks are gone and reboot. When it tries to come back up it will BSOD.

I have done this 4 times and I noticed last night that each time it is creating a folder on C: named "NVIDIA", "NVIDIA(2)", etc. The folders have different file sizes too, which seems odd to me.

One thing I noticed is that during the driver install it asks me if I want to install "SW" something-or-other. I looked that up and it's some kind of SATA drive optimization software, or something like that. I've chosen that option every time because it doesn't seem to be something that would be causing this type of problem- or, more to the point, it seems like my system would benefit from that software.

I suppose I could try loading the drivers again and choose to not load that SW thing, but I thought I'd see if I could get some help before going through the process again.

The "SW" file kills me everytime... Could be your problem right there!

I install = pain

I don't = happy motoring!

That being said, if you try it one more time and don't select the "SW" driver and it still BSOD's then I suggest trying a different version of the nforce drivers. Which one's are you currently trying to install?

(I've ended up with ancient ver 6.7 as it works best and most stable for me. Newer version doesn't mean better version necessarily!)

It's 6.7. I got it from the nVidia site, so I assumed it was the most recent version.

Hi

Am i correct in assuming that driver cleaner does not 'officially' work with windows XP??? i seem to recall that being that case if my memory serves me correctly although it has been a while since I last checked.

To be honest the 6.7 was released August/October 2005 and I always check for the latest updates before I do a re-format and fresh install so that I have everything to hand to start with.

Did you do a fresh install using the old drivers off of the disk or was this a current setup that you are only now trying to update?

Updating a current setup. I can't find the current Forceware version, so I figured I'd download the latest from nVidia just to make sure. Can someone tell me how to find the Forceware version? I tried PC Wizard, but couldn't find it there.

Just google nforce4 driver amd and sift the results...

You could also download the driver from the dfi site, if its a different one, and see how that goes...

LOL. No! I mean I don't know where to find what version I'm running on my computer. :D

Forceware drivers refers to the Video drivers. 84.56 on NV Site

nForce drivers are the chipset drivers. 6.70 is current.

Why aren't you uninstalling the Forceware drivers for your 7800?

Are you trying to upgrade the Video drivers?

Very confused at this point.

Your "Forceware" graphics drivers can be found in the nvidia info window.

Geez, I'm a retard. Yes, I'm talking about the NF4 chipset drivers. When I was writing "Forceware" I kept thinking that it didn't sound right.

That must have been really confusing..."He's trying to load the Forceware drivers, but he doesn't choose the option to remove the display driver?" WTF? Is this guy a 'tard? LOL...Thanks for setting me straight.

Now, with that said, I was doing the correct procedure and using the correct drivers, I was just calling it the wrong name here on the forum. So, back to the original question- Does anybody have any idea why I would keep getting a BSOD when I try to update to the 6.70 NF4 chipset drivers?

Oh, and the other question is- Where can I find the chipset driver version that is on my computer?

Dear "Tard", no biggie, it happens to all of :)

Remove ALL the nVidia Drivers including Forceware video.

Don't us anything but 6.70's. Say no to SW/IDE when asked.

Use driver cleaner in SAFE mode (a must) and delete everything.

After install and rebooting go back and do the video drivers.
