unix based OS's are NOT Unix. they're jokes next to the REAL unix. They're NOT the same. this is showing your ignorance kevin. Linux or any of it's other cousins are fine for a home server, a small work group server, or even web/email on a small scale. Unix is a mission critical, do it all in the enterprise world. It's not going to sit on some converted home built workstation, it's going to be on a $75k+ real server. It's going to have to handle 100x the number of users your little linux box can, it's going to have to run no matter what, cuz down time = loss of money, sometimes MILLIONS of $$$ a day. winNT enterprise/advance server is in the same exact role (though it can run on a regular pc). the servers that run these os's are not little toys kevin. they're very different from your little linux server... so stop confusing the two.

and you're still talking about this little world you live in kevin. you've not spent years of your life in the real world seeing and experiencing what it's really like. there's a reason I make 6 figures every year. I do the work, I go out in the REAL world and have to DO the work everyday (and many nights). when you come out of your little bubble and realize the world has more to do with what everyone else is doing as opposed to what you want to do, it'll change everything for you.

btw what experience do you have working in the real world? you said you work part time with the network admin for your school. I did too at 14. I replaced the hardware specialist at 17, left the district at 20 to persue bigger and better things. at 23 I'm back, have replaced the old network admin, and have been given full power to move the network from novell (7 servers) and the single unix server (an over grown card catalog) to windows 2003. I've run my own side business for several years now, and got out of playing with desktop pc's when ever possible to charge $100-$300 an HOUR to work on companies servers and networks. MS hired me due to a strong background in windows server and thier #1 adversary novell. I've had companies all over the country make offers to bring me in as a network engineer / admin (though they're either temp stuff or not worth moving for). I have more time learning this stuff than you'd could imangine. MCSE+I usually takes 2 years to complete the training and tests, CNA a year (taking my test for CNE monday night), CCNA a year (also upgrading that to engineer status soon)...

OK - Unix based includes Unix for a start. You said it your self and I said "Unix Based". I dont care if you have used windows for a long time. Does that mean its better? My dad had a 1985 accord for a long time too. Did that mean it was better than the 2000 accord? No! Also you can argue about the ease of use in windows but this is an OVERCLOCKING website. Now who do I know that is a complete retard with their computer AND overclocks? Um... Um... returned 0 results. About your training thats great you have those certifications but red hat certification is one of the top 5 asked for (that was around 2002) and last time I checked that was linux which is based on UNIX. Now do we have any more problems with the Unix based thing? Back to certification. You ought to atleast get a unix based certification because you WILL work with it. Its one of those hate it or love it, you just cant agnore it.

Finally, for all of you that think it would be so hard to get used to the GNU of it (What microsoft people call a GUI or Graphical User Interface) heres a screen shot. This is what is open in the window:

0. KDE 3.1 is the windowing environment

1. Xchat

2. XMMS (Winamp clone)

3. Naim (AIM client - btw Gaim came with your distro someone said that it didnt but it did - unless you had some misinformation)

4. Mozilla

5. KDE program bar,

In the task bar is (from left to right): KDE menu, Show Desktop, Control pannel, Konsole, Home, Mozilla, XChat, XMMS, Desktop switcher, Running programs, Hidden programs (best way to describe it) and of course the time.

i'm not even going to bother reading all this BS argumentative babble.

I would just like to know, if unix/linux is so much better than windows, then why, everyone i've come across that even bothers to use linux, ALSO uses windows, either dual-boot or another comp?!?! Obviously that says something...and what it says is nix is just not as good or popular because it can't handle everything windows can.

Even you, kevin, said you use windows as well, if i remember correctly for another thread.

uh, anyone else think that screenshot looks like crap? Give me the winxp gui anyday. That fake crap looks exactly that...FAKE. How can you stare at your monitor each day when it looks like THAT?! You must have a barfbag attached to the side of your computer case, don't you? :P

As I said - I could run it in linux with wine but windows runs them faster.

Also your argument is pathetic. INDUSTURY STANDARD... INDUSTRY STANDARD... INDUSTRY STANDARD

why dont you state facts!

also - It might look like crap to you (not to me mind you) but all the curvey crap in XP makes me sick

ive never used any *nix os's myself, ive got a few different versions laying around, just have never gotten to trying them out... i have had friends use *nix... and all of them ahve reverted back to ms because they have better things to do then search out drivers everytime they want to do something, personally.. i have nothing against windows, and if there was a wayto allow 98se to handle more then 30gig hddd space and 384+mb ram... then i would switch back, when i was running 98,it was ROCK stable ( even more so then my buddies 2kpro ) i have since switched to 2kpro with sp3 only because of hardware constraints.. and have yet to have any issues.. i just find all these ppl that have nothing better to do then bash an OS that they could never make... a little funny, microsoft designs their OS's for the common public... average hme computer users that only use their computer to e-mail, surf the web, and maybe play a basic game or 2... linux is a far cry from simple for a computer illiterate user.. even tho you say linux is free .. yeah... so... what comes with linux... almost nbothing.. ok, you gotta pay for wndows... ya so... look what comes with windows.. crap near everything.. its not hard to see what the choice is going to be for the general public, if linux where to have come just as loaded as windows, im pretty sure that linux would be so free anymore, as for unix... kevin, have you ever used unix?.. not a unix based os... but the actually unix.. cuz if not, your arguement with red, is completely irrelevant
