resuOne Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Hi, I recently upgraded to a DFI NF4 Ultra-D from an Asus A8N-E. When I put my system together and pressed the power button, all the fans spun up, but nothing ever showed up on the screen, and all 4 Red LED's were still on. I thought I might need to upgrade the bios to support dual core CPUs, so i took my Opteron 165 out and put in a 3500+ Newcastle chip. The system booted up fine and I upgraded to the 704-2BTA bios that I found at this forum. However, when I put the Opteron 165 back in, it still did not work. I booted it up again with the newcastle and flashed this time to the NF4LD329 bios. Still, the system will not boot with the Opteron 165. I have been using WinFlash to do the flashing since I don't have a floppy drive. Right now I am making this post on the same Opteron 165, but with my Asus board back in the system. What could be wrong with my DFI setup to keep it from booting?
Guest Kobalt Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 I am just setting up my mobo. Same setup as yours mostly. I used the official latest DFI BIOS, and before that, I had the 11/14/05 date version, it DID boot up with the opteron though. If you have a BIOS version earlier than that, then you need to flash I would assume. I did the DOS flash via floppy. You may want to borrow a floppy, and flash to the newest version (4/6/06) Right now, I have completed windows install, and am configuring devices. dissident Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 I suggest removing all componants and using the "first build" guide.. I had a similar problem, which for me was caused by having the "reset switch" plugged into the motherboard. When I removed it, everything worked fine. Try that once. See if that works. If not, remove everything except one stick of ram, the cpu, and video card. Test, repeat, etc.

I've tried pretty much everything in that guide already, with no improvement...
Guest Kobalt Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Hey, you can try the "safe boot" jumper, and see if it makes a difference. Pg 8 on the manual.

I've tried this, and I've tried clearing the cmos by taking the battery out as well.
Guest Kobalt Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Darn. How many LEDs you see when you try to boot? (lower bottom end of the board)?
resuOne Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Darn. How many LEDs you see when you try to boot? (lower bottom end of the board)? 4 when it first turns on, then 3 for split-second, then back to 4.
Guest Kobalt Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Dunno. I am still a DFI N00b. If the "long clear cmos" procedure didn't work in the stickys, and you tried the 'safe boot', and still don't POST, then I don't got any other ideas besides to make sure all 4 power plugs are plugged in. (ATX, 4pin ATX, molex, and floppy connector). Sorry. Oh, someone mentioned in another post something about it could be a RAM issue also, so you may want to try 1 stick in the orange slots. All 4 are plugged in and I've tried one stick of memory in addition to trying a completely different set of RAM. Thanks for trying...
