Way too muych heat

Recommended Posts

I cant tell if its giving me wrong temps or that my XFX 7800 GTX's really dont like being upside down. In general there is no difference between My setup now and the last rig I had with the exception of my motherboard being upside down in my Lian Li case and yet my cards reach temps of 100C and dont shut down either. I plan on investing in a CM Stacker when I get the cash but I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced this issue or if there is some other way to resolve it.

Note I have 4 120mm Fans 3 Out and 1 In surrounding the mother board and one directly in front of the video cards pulling Hot air out, and one above them....

If they have heat pipe coolers on them, the cooler is not working. Since the cards are upside down, I assume it's a BTX case? Heat pipes don't work upside down. Heat travels up... I had the same problem with my 6600 gts that had pipes on them. I booted up after install and the temps on both cards started pushing 80C real quick, shut down and immediatley oredered 2 gpu blocks... When I switched them to h20, I had no problems at all.

Yeah the only problem is I have no money to invest in a case right now.....which blows but I guess I will have to deal with it for now until I get the cash to get a better case.....I never would have thought about it causing this kind of issue but I wish I had thought before dishing out 200+ bucks for my Lian Li case...

Also the case I currently own isnt large enough to house an type of radiator or pump...so a new case is a better option for me.....damn Physics..

this is not true, heatpipes don't use gravity but have a wick inside along which the fluid moves in reaction to heat, that is to say proper heatpipes, after all cpu coolers have symetric heatpipes too and are at 90 degrees.

I must admit that it IS the most logical sounding explanation though, perhaps they for some reason use a gravity based heatpipe system with the nvidia coolers?

I always was suspicious about the heatpipe popularity, it's very hard to tell if the makers of coolers with heatpipes really got the principle and if they are heatpipes at all, they could just put on some tubes and sell it as heatpipe after all, and when does a reviewer ever open them?

I think:

Heat does tend to rise, and probobly does effect the performance a little bit. But more importantly, heat always flows towards the coolest spot. The cooler side of the heat pipe/heat sync will probobly tend to *wick* away the heat.

How many case fans do you have?

It sounds like you might just need some more air flow. Try directing a fan on the cards. You can even use a house fan with the side of your case off if you have to. That will at least tell you if it's an air flow problem.

The CM-Stacker is an amazing case. You can flip from ATX to BTX.

Yeah air flow is not the issue...I have 4 120mm Fans surrounding the cards...There is not possible way I could get more air flow unless I added a 5th 120mm fan, I have one as a top blow hole, rear exhaust 1 intake level with the cards and one exhaust diagonal to that....There is a lot of air moving,

My cpu on full load never goes above 40 with stock heatsink....
