Which HDD for RAID0 24/7

Recommended Posts

Hi...

I'm looking for a pair of drives which are running 24/7 in a Raid 0 setup. At this time I have a pair of hitachi 80gig SATA II running but I don't think that they will be fine in 6 Month... the Raptor ist a little too expensive... I'm looking for an alternative to the Raptor... Maybe someone is running one of these drives???

Seagate ST3250823NS RAID-Edition

Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500YD RAID Edition

Thx

For what it is worth, no matter what drive you pick, you got about the same chance of them failing. This is what the guys at the datacenter said. They have used all brands, and they all fail sooner or later running 24/7.

There are a few exceptions though.

Always backup, or start doing mirror...

But which SATA drive would you choose for building a server running 24/7. SCSI or Raptor drives are too expensive. I was looking for some reviews of RAID systems with SATA hdds but didn't found something useful. No one is running a server 24/7 and can tell something about the drives that is used in the server?

Sure, I have to mirrow the drives but I don't want a drive that is failing in about 6 month...

Running a RAID0 array isn't any harder on the drives than running them in standard config. If this server you are building is going to have to 24/7 disk activity then I can only tell you that it would be cheaper in the long run to use server quality components. If this is just not an option I prefer WD drives, then just do a RAID0+1 with 4 drives and that should cover you for at least a year.
