johnmich27 Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 I'm planning on purchasing what's in my sig. I would like to get any thoughts or suggestions on it before I pull the trigger. I plan on doing some OC'ing and eventually go SLI, but not enough $ for that just yet. (That's also the reason for a lower end CPU, plus I've heard they OC pretty well) Thanks,
Thraxz Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 I suggest... The crossfire DFI board because, for the time being, ATI cards OC better. 1900xt (or 1800xtx) AMD Opty 165 (it even comes with one hell of a stock HSF) Any OCZ or GSkill 2gig kit. OCing memory isn't good bang for the buck
Burky Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Make sure you don't forget the obvious like arctic silver 5, or a nice 120mm fan for your heatsink. As for the above post, if you are looking for a cheap cpu, you won't find it with an opteron 165, but you might want maybe an opteron 144 or 146 as they overclock better for roughly the same kind of price, you could hit 2.8ghz with one of those, whereas usually about 2.6ghz with a Venice. If you insist on a Venice core cpu, just get a 3000+ as you will get the same oc results. All Venice cores clock the same in the end, regardless of whether it's a 3000+ or a 3500+, only difference is the stock speed. The gskill 2x1024 kits are great, and are cheap. Get some of that. I don't know enough about video cards, so I can't help you there Video cards is a matter of
iamkoza Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 if you plan on oc'ing, get a pc4000 kit I'm not sure the Powerstream 520 will be able to do 2 7900 gt's in sli, you may want to look at the new ocz gamestream 600 or 700, or another 600-700 watt psu in the recommended list
johnmich27 Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 So, an Opeteron 144 can OC higher than a Venice 3000? It's conceivable to get 2.8 GHz with a good 3rd party cooler and plenty of ventilation with a 144? I think the Partiot memory will overclock a decent amount (I actually already bought that piece because I feel I got a good deal, $125) Any more ideas about the power supply and SLI? kimahri626 Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 I would stick with the 7900 GT and buy another once you have the cash. You can get some mean oc's with those and the right cooling. I also agree with going with the opteron instead of the venice.
