Which power supply?

Recommended Posts

I'm new here and I wasn't sure if this is the correct section of the forum to put this in, but here it goes: I am in the process of putting together a desktop with a DFI Ultra-D motherboard. I will be putting in an Opteron 165 (overclocked), 2gb G.Skill ddr500, 7900gt (overclocked), Raptor 150, Audigy 2 ZS, and a DVD burner. Here are the three power supplies I am looking at:

1. OCZ PowerStream 520w

2. Seasonic S12 500w

3. Season S12 600w

Initially I was going to go with the OCZ because of the many reviews I had read and recommendations it had received. However, I'm not a big fan of LEDs, and the OCZ has an LED fan in the rear. Also, I heard that the Seasonic power supplies are supposed to be quieter...I'm trying to build a quiet (although not silent) system.

My first concern is cooling. The OCZ has dual 80mm fans while the Seasonic models have a single 120mm fan. I'll be using an Antec SLK3000-B case with front and rear 120mm fans. I'm pretty sure it won't get cooked, but from what I've read PSUs with dual fans are better than those with single fans. I'd kind of like to go with the Seasonic because of the low noise advantage, but I also want my system to run as cool as possible.

My second concern is power, both for the system and for the UPS. Since I will be overclocking both the processor and the video card, I want to make sure I have enough power to drive everything. I think 500 watts will be plenty, but I wanted to be sure. Also, I will be using a 660w Belkin UPS for my monitor (75-watt Dell 2005fpw LCD) and the box. That means that the system will only get 585 watts from the UPS. I played with a few wattage calculators online and got well under 500-watts for my system, but I don't know if going with a 600-watt Seasonic means that it'll take 600 watts at startup. Any advice in this area would be appreciated.

So in a nutshell, I want a good enough power supply to power my system, work on the UPS with the monitor, and be quiet, while not overheating. Are the Seasonic models with the 120mm fans okay? Would getting the 600w model be a mistake since the UPS will only have 585 watts to give it?

Some people have problems with the seasonics simply refusing to supply power to their boards, others have no problems. If it does work though, both the 500w and 600w models should be fine. I'd go for the 600w personally, if I was going to buy seasonic. Although I'm not sure how your UPS will affect things. And I'm not sure if I would buy seasonic for DFI, just in case I did have problems. OCZ seems like a good choice to me.

Thanks for the input, I hadn't heard that before. Everything is pointing to the OCZ right now. If it's too loud and if the LEDs bother me too much, I'll just replace the fans with Panaflos or something. OCZ it is! :)

The OCZ PSU fans aren't loud at all and the only way the LED fans will bother you, is if your looking at the back of your case.

I built a computer a few years ago for my wife that had a blue LED fan...lit up the whole back wall lol. btw looks like our rigs will be nearly the same according to your sig
