synthesist Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 So I've been patient and finally acquired my BFG 6800 Ultra AGP. The last thing my overclocker needed. But a STUPID, STUPID, STUPID thing happened. This sucker is HUGE and somehow, overeagerness I suspect, I managed to rip off the capacitor at the bottom lower right edge of the beast when I was installing it or taking it back out the first time. Installing it I do believe. It's okay (if you can say that about a disaster of this magnitude), the connectors just tore free from their connections on the board. I don't remember forcing anything but it wasn't a drop fit either........................ So what do I do now? 1) RMA it to BFG hoping they'll take pity on this fool? 2) Try to find a tech to solder the thing back on? 3) Toss it in a box and forget the whole thing? 4) or???? Flame me if you wish, nothing like this has EVER happened to me before. I am in serious pain here..................................... NEOAethyr Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Rma it. Bfg seems to have horrible quality control. Ranging from what you just experienced, which is a bit shocking. To having no thermal interface. BFG: BLOWS - F@CKING GARBAGE, I think lol. Something like that.

Syn I think that youre not the only one that has not done this before. You can always resolder it but the trick it is you know how without carbonating the material. You could always find an experinced electrician to reinstall or get an RMA. It really does take some force to break the parts off from the PCB so it could have been broken off on the cause of frail soldering. BFG is usually cool and you may get the pitty youre looking for

synthesist Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Thanks for the interesting responses. I tried to call BFG this afternoon and was on their system for 45 minutes, hearing, "Your call is important to us please stay on the line." when I had to disconnect to go to an appointment. That was discouraging to say the least. I will call again first thing tomorrow and try to get the ball rolling. The idea of getting a 7 series card is intriguing, do they have 7 series cards for AGP? Guest YuKoN Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 yes and the 7800gs rocks- even if you have to pay a couple extra bucks- it's definitely a solid performer head and shoulders above the 6800. make sure you check to see if it's an option, when you do actually get them on the line. or worst case- it's not too rough to solder a cap back on. finding someone to do it for you shouldn't be that hard- and will only take 5-10 mins to do. sorry for your misfortune- I've done the same to my 6600GT, but just soldered it back on myself. it's a bit ugly I admit, but it still works like a champ. synthesist Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Well...................things are looking up. I got BFG on the phone and they didn't ask any questions to speak of, just said send it on in and gave me an RMA. I will include a note asking about an upgrade/trade to the 7800gs. Thanks again for the ideas and thoughts Syn

johneverd Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Last year, when my new BFG 6800 OC (vanilla flavor) card had artifacts when I first tried it, BFG replaced it with a 6800GT card. It took a couple of weeks to get it, but it was well worth the wait. Their RMA service does come thru. Glad that it worked out well for you OP. Had you tried to soldier it yourself, before trying for the RMA, it would have certainly voided your warranty.
