svtwin Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Hi all, first post and all that, so go easy! I am looking for some critique (good or bad) on my new system, am currently in the process of buying all the pieces and would like your honest opiions on whether this is a worthy system. Will mainly be used for gaming, internet and music and am fairly interested in doing some OC'ing. One main question - Is it worth going up to the SLI nf4 for later upgrades, or will the ultra D be sufficient? Secondly - any advice on RAM? 1x AMD Opteron 146 Socket 939 $325.00 1x Antec SLK3000B Black NO PSU $74.00 1x DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D 939 $195.00 1x Pioneer 111 Dual Layer 16x DVD+-RW Black $69.00 1x Seagate 250Gb 16Mb SATA II $155.00 1x Team Xtreem Winbond BH5 PC3200 1Gb/2x512Mb Kit TXDR1024M400C25DC $179.00 1x XFX nVidia 7900GT Extreme Edition 520mhz 256Mb TV/2DVI PCI-E $489.00 1x Coolermaster Real Power 550w PSU SLI Ready $152.00 Keep in ming these prices i have listed are in AUS dollars Total system comes to $1770 or so. The only other thing i have to buy is a 19" monitor, hopefully i can get a decent 8ms with DVI for under $400.
Smoken Joe Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Though err cool BH5 is not very popular anymore- noting aganst it but 2 GB seems to be the norm for gamers and often not too much higher in price. There are some stickies on thiis but bottom line the more memory the better and it doesnt give the same boost as older systems and they get hot. More and more games expect you to have 2GB of memory though I am sure you will be able to get away with it for a wile. Dont know about that brand but I am sure there is plenty of info elseware on that memory ost seems to do OK. You can mod the Ultra D to SLI if you find the need mut most people that need to think about it never do. Most games perform more than well with the latest/greatest or second/third card. By all means get the SLI if you want but be carfull with PSU if you get the expert needs the extra connectors and have them done right not just extras slapped on see stickie. The ultra will aso need very good PSU see stickie. 28 or more volts on the 12 volt line and 480 real watts total (not the super optamistic way some do the big cheat is temps measured at is your case at 10 degrees?) If cost is an issue you can often get the same case as Antec form cheming and Cheftec to name a couple brands though the paint might be lesser on the cheap ones. More for a faster video card or ATI. svtwin Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Thanks for the prompt replys guys, 2gb memory is in the works, but from asticky i saw on these boards, they like that ram? 2gb is my preffered option, so i think ill go with that then! Yeah, checked MSY, they just seem too difficult to deal with, they dont freight etc. And the prices i got are from research on www.staticice.com.au and i ended up mostly getting the stuff from www.pcmaniacs.com.au
