Conflicting two disk RAID 1 descriptions

Mmmm, thinking of making my boot disk RAID 1, but I have just read some very conflicting definitions of RAID 1. Some descriptions say there is redundancy but NO performance gain, while other descriptions say there is redundancy and DOUBLE the read performance.

 

So what the correct definition for a two disk XP nF4 system please.

I am by no means an expert on this but I see no reason why there would be performance increase on read times. RAID 1 is just for mirroring a disk.

 

You might be refering to RAID 0 which is a stripping method that takes chunks of data and distrubute the load on each disk in the array. This increases read and write times.

Ok that makes sense, the part I guess I failed to understand was that since the hdd have the same content on the disks the controller can share the reading of the data.

 

I noticed a mention that random reading from the disks is what is increase, sequential is not. I dont know what that refers to though, maybe someone can clarify

Yes, seems that way.. But I have spent a day going through this forum and very few seem to use RAID 1 as every one uses RAID 0. What I want is a mirror and a read speedup, this I think is RAID 1 but would be nice if someone on this forum had some input and performance figures... (A how to guide would be nice, but this I'll find when my new new disks show up)
