dreamsr Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Hey guys whats the 411 with this prcocesor? Incidentally I always wanted to know why does AMD list there processors as xxxx+ does that mean its possible to overclock it to that speed? UncleDavid218 Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 No it doesn't mean it can do 4GHz. The best you can do is probably 2.9GHz. At any rate, the names of AMD chips don't really mean anything, you just have to know what clock speeds they represent. The 4000+ are good CPUs but for less money you could get a 3700+. DFI939 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 for about the same price as a 3700 sandy you could get a 146 opteron http://www.tankguys.biz/opteron-cache-p-1420.html and probly get higher overclock. http://www.xl-pc.com/scr/xtcat.dll/item?pr...item=AMD-OP-146 ^^^thats a steal^^^
UncleDavid218 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I was going to suggest that but I figured that would bring up more questions about Opterons... and just didn't feel like it at the time...
ReelFiles Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Definately go for the opteron.

ReelFiles Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 It ain't brainsurgery; $400 for my opty @2.75GHz $1000 for an fx60 @2.6GHz LOL
Guest Retratserif Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Now is a opty @2.75 better than a 3700+ @2.75, for gaming? Not benching. Becuase my chip costed me $200.

No, just opterons tend to overclock better so you might be able to get a less expensive processor and push it further than your 3700, but then again you might not. Guest Retratserif Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I thought the 3700+'s go to 3.1 if water cooled and given you have good ram, then again there is always chance that it will not get past 2.75. I already have the chip. I just wanted to to know if there was any advantage over the other in gaming.
