As many of you may or may not know, OverclockersClub.com has our own IRC Channel (Chat Room). I created this thread to give you some basic information about our IRC Channel.

As many of you know, OCC likes to give stuff away. We have contest for site members, for forum members, for team members, and we even have contest for those who hang out in the OCC IRC Channel. That's right, you can win stuff just by hanging out in the IRC room.

A majority of the information you need to get in the OCC IRC Channel can be found in the OCC IRC Guide. This guide currently deals with using the popular mIRC client, however I plan on updating it in the next few months to include other clients as well. - Please note, this guide is currently out of date (as of 03/21/2004).

How to get to the OCC Chat:

- From our main page and then click on "Chat" under Community on the left hand side of the page.

- Or if you have an IRC client you can connect to /server chat.overclockersclub.com then /join #overclockersclub.com

Popular IRC Clients:

mIRC

Klient

BersIRC

XChat

Trillian

######-X

Note about the Java Chat (Chat link from OCC main page):

In order to access the Java Chat, you need Java installed. For users of any OS before Windows XP, you already have this installed. In addition, if you are using Windows XP and have Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, you will also have java abilities. However, for those of you using an un-service packed version of Windows XP or if you skipped SP1 and went straight with SP1a you will need to download and install the Sun Java Runtime (aka JRE or Java Plugin), which can be found at http://www.sun.com or http://www.java.com.

So, what is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat is a multi-user chat network where people all over the world can meet and talk in channels or in private. Using an IRC client, you connect to an IRC server, which is connected to one of several IRC networks. Networks have anywhere from tens to tens of thousands of people you can chat with.

People on IRC can chat channels or in private. Channels are created dynamically; there is no limit to the number of channels that can be formed. Whatever your interest, you can probably find a channel dedicated to it. If not, creating your own channel is as simple as joining it; when you join a channel that does not exist, it is automatically created.

What to do in IRC?

The main thing to do in IRC is chat. :) In many way's it's quite similar to the OCC forums. You ask a question, and someone replies to it. The response may not always come immediately, but usually you can have your question answered within hours. Unlike the OCC Forums, there are no "categories" in which to ask your question. You just ask your question. Technical talk isn't all that goes on in the OCC Chat; we also talk about TV, Wrestling, Cars, Movies, Music, Games, Life, and anything else that crosses our mind.

I was there, but no one was talking.

Most of the people tend to stay inside the chat, even though they may go to play a game, watch a movie, eat, sleep, or do something else. This is known as idling. Most of the people that idle, read the logs of the chat when they come back from being idle, and then respond to questions and comments that came up while they were away. Just because you are not responded to immediately, doesn't mean that someone won't help you. - Remember, it's kind of like the forums, you ask a question and it gets responded to later.

Where can I find help or commands for IRC?

Commands tend to very slightly from program to program, so the best place to look is the web site for the program you are using. - And I recommend using a program over the "Java Chat".
