Evercool VC-RE Chipset Fan Installation Tutorial Video! (2 fast mirror

I'd just like to point out that the VC-RF (which I just bought) is not identical the VC-RE at all, and hardly fits on the motherboard. I did manage to get it on there but it hardly touches the chipset because the distance between the pins is too wide and it forces them to get crooked.

 

Guess I'll have to try modding it somehow.

I bought this cooler because in Europe the VC-RE is not available and this guide suggested both were the same.

 

nowhere in my tutorial nor any of my posts have I claimed that the VC-RF is anything like the VC-RE

 

Nowhere

 

If you have listened to others who have claimed such a thing but have not proven it then that is bad on your part for not getting confirmation from a trusted source.

I had chipset cooling issues for some time now (51-53*C underload) and ultimately took a floor fan, took off the side of my case and had it blow directly on my chipset and everything bringing temperatures down (chipset down to 44*C).

 

I don't regularly check the forums, mainly just when I have an issue. Having a floor fan next to me all the time had taken its toll so I went surfing for chipset heat issues. Came across this thread about a week ago and got the Evercool VC-RE in the mail today. So far underload I haven't gone above 39*C(temp edited).

 

I would highly recommend this to anyone. Took about 15 minutes total for me to do this.

I have a few questions on this chipset cooler.

 

I have an opty 165 overclocked to 2.7 on stock voltage. The chipset goes to about 60c full load and it gets as loud as a jet as you all know. What Im asking is what type of temperature can I expect with this evercool?

 

Also, how much quieter is it? Im planning on switching to watercooling and the ultra d doesnt allow me to watercool the chipset. Will i be able to hear it alot over the water?

Well, I made the same mistake you did. Based on claims from some posters here and other places (not you, Angry) I was under the apparently incorrect impression that the RE and the RF are the same fan, just packaged differently (RF including RAM sinks).

Since I don't have an RE to compare my RF to I still can't say they are not the same. What I CAN say for sure though, is that the post holes on the RF are NOT the same distance apart as the ones on the Ultra-D mobo, or the stock fan. The holes on the RF are slightly farther apart, and when I say slightly, I mean slightly...like maybe by half the diameter of one hole.

So I wound up drilling another hole that overlapped the original hole by about 50% on one hole only, and everything was peachy. Other than that the fan fits the space on the motherboard perfectly and does not hit the edge of my video card, even though it is a hair taller than the stock fan.

As far as performance goes, it blows the stock fan completely out of the water.

To maintain 54c my old fan would have to run between 3000 and 4000. This fan is keeping me at 47c at less than 1800. And the only reason it's running that fast is that I had to bump up the minimum % speed in SpeedFan because it kept shutting the fan off using the old settings!

As far as your video goes Angry, it showed me what I need to know, which is all it really needed to do when all is said and done. I did however fully except the music to transition to the old "chic a bow wow" at any moment followed by you saying something like "yeah baby, you want more of my thermal interface compound, don't you?"

I did diverge from you instructions at one point however. I replaced the twist tie on the fan wires with a zip tie. The twist tie has a metal wire running through the middle and the way my luck runs, the exposed ends would line up just right and smoke my mobo :(

Friekin hilarious dude. As far as the holes being slightly further apart the VC-RE is the same way. Looking at the pictures the holes where the pins go through are in the bottom of the VC-RF base which doesn't allow for much leeway. Whereas the VC-RE's pins are attatched to a metal spring running accross the heatsink which will bend slightly and still provide good contact to the chipset. The pins don't go through the heatsink base at all.

 

I have also seen people here claiming the VC-RF is the same as the VC-RE. If you look at the pics they are similair but they are DEFINITELY NOT the same.

Ahhhh. So not only are they not the same, but neither one of them is actually the right size. It's just easier to fudge the RE into place. Gotcha.

 

Glad you liked the "yeah baby" line. Angry could make a good living doing voice overs for porn. He's got the voice for it. Not to mention the appropriate music collection, apparenlty ;)

I just try to install the vc-rf and I must say that in now way I think is the same as the vc-re because i'm getting temps of 49-51C at idle at the bios screen. So I'm assumming it is not touching the chipset otherwise the temps by logic should be lower. Anyway i'm going to dril another hole next to the one that doesnt fit well and probably screw with one of my old cpu heatsink socket - i'll see how to mod that!

 

Anyway my bigger concern now is the thermal paste to applied, I was using the leftover of the zalman cpu fan and I would rather get some good stuff on it this time. Like silver artic ceramic or artic silver 5 whichever you guys thinks work best. And due to the fact that Happy_games mentioned he use ceramic i've been trying to message you about the place you bought yours as I have no idea of the product until i saw this turorial. I'll like to apply it to my cpu and video card so if you have the item number or place to buy please post it here. sorry if asked before.
