Windows loading problems

Not really sure what is wrong so I decided to post it here. Been told it might be a driver not compatible with Windows XP SP 2, but I think I might have a bad hard drive.

 

Tell me what you all think.

 

Windows XP SP2

LanPart UT nF4 Ultra-D

Western Digital 250g SATAII 16mb hard drive

GeForce 6800GT video card

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX Processor

OCZ Gold Series 2x512 ram

 

The problem:

 

I have had a computer that I built myself for several months that was stable. I recently decided to upgrade from an older 80 gig IDE hard drive to a SATAII. Installed a fresh copy of windows onto it... Then I started to notice problems.

 

Blue screens of death. BAD_POOL_HEADER was one I saw when the screen stayed up long enough for me to see.

 

Tried installing new drivers to see if that was a problem, but didn't really notice a difference. After a couple weeks the problem of blue screens stopped.

 

Then a little while after that I suddenly started having stability issues. The computer would suddenly cut out. Seemed to happen a lot with firefox... Not really sure, but probably not since a new problem occured.

 

I was plaing WoW and suddenly the computer froze. The moniter speakers came on and made noise like a radio with bad reception makes. I don't use the monitor speakers. I have a small 2 speaker set I use.

 

I tried rebooting after the freeze and the computer would go through the normal steps in booting. The windows logo with black background would appear, the one with the moving bar near the bottom middle. Then it would go to the windows logo screen with a blue background right before asking for the password. Only nothing would appear. Just a blue windows logo screen with the two lines at the top and bottom. I retried loading several times (including trying safe mode) but it would ALWAYS get stuck at this point.

 

One time when I tried to bottom I got an error on boot up saying Read Disk Error, but never got it again.

 

Any ideas on what the problem is? Thanks for the help.

Check routing and or replace SATA cable. (I would just replace them with some heavy duty ones.)

Change Sata Port *(change in bios also if necessary.)

 

Check install routines / install guides and make sure you have everything installed as recommended.

*(More importantly, find what no to install.)

 

Research error messages on web to find likely component issues / culprits.

 

 

Sounds like yout MBR is possibly corrupted or damaged and may call for a repair or reinstall.

Ran the WD disk check utility yet? Tried seeding the SATA cable to different SATA ports? Did you install the OS via an image push? If so, you could get this issue since the IDE and SATAII controllers are different.

Did u leave the ide hd plugged in when u installed xp onto the new drive.

Have you tried prime or sp2004 with large FFTs to test your memory stabiliy.

It's difficult to tell if the bsods etc are caused by harware instability or xp issues.

Usual question what power supply are u using ??

Are all 4 power connectoions made to mobo.

Addiarmadar, I cannot get into windows so I can't run the WD disk check... Unless there is another way to do it without logging into windows?

 

Supershanks, The previous IDE harddrive was disconnected before windows installation. Also I cannot get into windows to use any programs. It stops as the blue windows screen(ussually the one where the request for password or choosing adminstrator/user comes up) but the choice to enter password or choose user never comes up.

 

All 4 power connections are made to motherboard.

 

As to prime or sp2004... Just an average joe user. Not sure what those are.

 

I also got some specs listed at the bottom of my posts. I use an OCZ ModStream OCZ45012U ATX/BTX/PCI Express/SATA 550W Power Supply.

Thought reading your comment re installing drivers u were in xp.

well if youv'e not got into xp running prime or SP2004 is a no can do.

Try running memtest grom the bios or floppy/cd to eliminate that as a problem.

Burn the disk and set it to boot (that) CD 1'st and boot up.

navigate with spacebar to menu of chioce.

(and I know it has 2 versions of wd utilities on it. )

 

UBcd has MOST HD manuf'rs diagnostic software on it and its pretty much what I would most likely use to test a hd. *(no more booting off a floppy to test a HD like in the old days....)
