michaelzhao Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 My north bridge fan is loud. Well, loud for me. I hate actively cooled north bridges. I have a Gigabyte mobo, K8N-PRO SLI. Its not a bad motherboard. I was wondering if I could rip the passive NB cooler on that and put it on my DFI. Would there be any detrimental effects? I do have my computer overclocked. I just got it for a few days now. I'm burning it in w/ a FSB of 275 on a 10x multiplier and a RAM divider of 7/10 w/ timings of 2-2-2-5 and a command rate of 1T. Would OC'ing cause the northbridge to run too hot for an passive cooler? Come to think of it, I'm not even sure what north bridges are supposed to be running at... what is "hot" for a north bridge? braz2kuk Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Ripping something out of a gigabyte board and putting in a DFI board is not clever and i would not do it, go online and find yourself a northbridge cooler thats compatiable with your board they are about i have seen them and they are fairly cheap. then just repplace the curretn DFI cooler with it get yourself some nice articl silver 5 to do this and use some TIM remover to clesan the northbridge first and you should notice an improvement Pete. michaelzhao Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Thanks, I got some AS5 and some Artic Clean at home. Do you have particular Passive NB you have in mind? You see, all the passive NB's I've seen are too big. I have a 7800gt w/ a huge AC Silencer on it (Rev 3.). I'm just afraid it would get in the way of the North Bridge. The good thing about the Gigabyte NB cooler, is that is very low profile. However, from the mobo layout, it doesn't seem the graphics card would even touch the NB. Does anyone have any experience with this?
cronocrash Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 check out the evercool vc-re. check this out... http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...+chipset+cooler
OceanSeasforMe Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...77&page=1&pp=15 Give this thread a read. Others have made passive NB coolers. Some of the pics are gone on the thread, but if you read it you will see some creative solutions. *(if you just have to have passive NB cooling, otherwise I would just pick the one on this webpage that A_G is reccomending currently.) michaelzhao Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 lol... thats so hardcore. I bow down to the man who makes his own NB cooler. I acquiesce to him on the hardcoreness scale. He... is more harcore.
OceanSeasforMe Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Funny, both links are the same, I figured cronocrash had posted a different link as I did not first click it. Good thread also. "clean and replace stock TIM on NF4" http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20827 BOL with it.

mbetea Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 If it's the same chipset and running at the same voltage I do not see why it wouldn't work. Then there is the matter of making sure it uses the same mount design and mounting holes and of course doesn't interfer with any motherboard components. michaelzhao Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 The evercool cooler does look good. However, it is still an active cooler. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good passive cooler? Most importantly, will my graphics card and silencer touch the cooler? It might not, I was just wondering if anybody had any experience. Nehil Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 The 7800Gt with a AC Silencer 5 Rev3 dosen't block more then without since it's the PCB layout that matters. And check my signature for what I use, but you have to be able to move the card to the second PCI-E slot, but don't worry, tests have been made and you'll loose about 1% performance in graphicbenchmarks.
