SATA II Hard drives compatibility with Nforce4

Hi All,

 

As the title says, Are there any lists for Sata II HD's thats 100% compatible with no known issues with the DFI SLI-D as I'm in need for a new HD, just bought a western Digital Sata II 320gb 16mb cache, which I just had to refund as it kept locking up/freezing my current system.

 

any links or info would be extremely helpful

I'm looking for something around the 300gb size. I guess if you have no issues with the 80 gb I guess the 300 gb would be the same just bigger?

I'm using 2 of the Seagate 160gB sata2 and have never had an issue. I also have 2 Seagate 250gB sata 1 that work great. They work well with DFI and NF4 and are fast, quiet and have a five year warranty. I understand they now have a 300gB with a 16MB cache. Make it easy on yourself, go with the Seagate.

I'm running a WD 300GB RE (raid edition) drive on my Ultra-D with no problems, don't know if the boards SATA setup is different than the -SLI, BTW you might try setting the jumper for the 1.5 speed, it really doesn't affect the speed of the drive itself. Not to knock Seagate but their drives consistantly bench lower than other drives in published test but only on the order of 5 - 10%.

I guess there may be a list, I don't know. All I can tell you is I have 2 Samsung spinpoints (like it says in the sig) and they work like a charm.

There's only one brand of hard drives that gives grief to its owners and that is Maxtor....stay away from it.....had issues with nforce4 and ICHR5 when I had a p4....they overheat( more so than the other brands) so...avoid the head aches....

Western Digital and Hitachis are the kings...

I have a pair of Hitachi 250GB SATA II with NCQ enabled and they are working very well. I do not have the NV IDE drivers loaded. And I AGREE the Maxtors seem to have quality control issues AND design issues. Currenly I like the Hitachi's better than Seagate as in my personal experience they are a bit faster and quieter.

Woody I think I have the same drive as you... no issues. Maybe you just got a bad drive?

I use Samsung SATA2 drives 250GB each and have had no issues what so ever

The larger drives those greater than 250 gig do seem to have a slightly higher rate of failure. Maxtor is the only one with real issues but some hard drives just fail that is life. Segate and hitachis are quality Personaly I would consider 2 smaller drives and make sure that whatever you get has a fan on it especaly if it is larger than 160GB or two platters. Western digital has programs to test drives also thogh it only sees big problems. You can also aces the smart drive info with programs like speedfan.
