Does crossfire require 2 of the same card?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if crossfire requires 2 of the same card or if you can have a master card and a different slave card.

you need a crossfire master card for x1800 crossfire and x1900 , they have a different connector and a slave x1900xt.

that is wrong. You need a CrossFire Ready card and a CrossFire Edition card. The processing engine for crossfire is built into the CrossFire Edition card, without it, you have just wasted 400+ dollars.

Yeah, the crossfire edition card is the master card, a card that says crossfire ready would be the slave. You should only crossfire cards of the same series, the best combination would be 2 identical cards but one slave, one master. This is because in crossfire mode, the speed of the core/memory will be run at the same speed as the slower card, so even if you have one faster card and one slower one of the same series (ie. xfire x1900 xt and x1900 xtx) you won't be able to take advantage of the better performance of the better card (unless you overclock the slower card to the same speed as the faster one).

Just out of plain ole curiousity, has anyone tried to crossfire 2 same model cards from different manufacturers? Like an ATi X1900 Master and lets say.....an asus x1900xt?
