1aschnitzel Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I am going to order a 7900GTX whenever it will be available again in my favourite online shop. But untill then I need to know what DFI Board I need to take. My SLI DR broke down and I will have to get a new one. However I am wondering if a double slot graphic card like the 7900 will fully cover the motherboard fan! Before I had a 7800GTX which was much more slim but it already made cooling pretty complicated. Still I was capable to keep the motherboard at around 45°C at high load. I definelty want to stick to DFI, but I dont want to have this cooling trouble once again, or even a more complicated one. On the Expert board the PCI-E slots are a bit more away from each other which should give the fan a little bit more space to breath... but will that be enough to compensate for the 7900 double width? I doubt it! So the question is the following 1.) would a 7900GTX fully cover the mobo fan of a SLI-DR? Would it look better on an Expert? 2.) If I change from SLI-DR to Expert, would I need to reinstall windows or drivers? 3) Does anyone have a double slot graphic card and if so could you make photo so I can have a look in how far the motherboard fan is covered? Muchas gracias?

1aschnitzel Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 I see, looks like a 7800GTX on the ordinary SLI-DR. So I assume it might be better to go for the Expert. Thank you very much for your help and for making the effort to take a photo!
uneedav8 Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 The card sits right up against the fan.....I was glad the card was able to seat all the way.

1CE Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 Just thought you might want to know, my chipset temps are at 52 and have trouble cooling down, as the fan doesn't have much to vent.
1aschnitzel Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 As I said, I cant judge for the expert yet, but to cool the SLI-DR with a 7800GTX on top of it I used an additional fan right next to it. I was able to keep it stable at 48°C at full load. You should try it. I used a 120 fan and it doesnt blow directly against the MB but along the graphic card. It realy worked fine
ICON57 Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 my Expert mobo with a 7800gtx...as per my sig(even though i need to change it) chipset temps were 45~46c, and i did replace the stock tim, but my venus with this behemoth card has my chipset temps running a few celcius higher, and i did pull off the fan, and replaced the stock tim. the 7800gtx idled at about 46c...this 7900gtx idels at abput 52c... Dynomutt Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 I have the sli-dr and it completley covers the chipset fan, causing me serious cooling problems,i have applied AS5 to the little bugger and barley no difference, i dare not OC back o 2.6 cos chipset is idleing 49c on stock speeds Load in the high fifties. does anyone no of a heatpipe type cooler that could be used on the chipset? Guest shaolin95 Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 This may sound stupid but, do you really need a SLI board that card too? Not trying to hijack just curious.
Dynomutt Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 I originally had 2 6600GT's in SLI and just recently upgraded to the 7900GTX, thats why I have the SLI board, also not planning on upgrading the gfx card for a few years (if possible) so I figured it would make sense to get as high end as possible, would have got the x1900xtx if it werent so noisy.
