Prime stable for 12 hours but.......

Recommended Posts

Ok so I spent like a week fine tuning my memory settings and voltages and I managed to get prime stable at 2.5 (278x9) mem divider 5/6 and it ran sweet through 12 hours of a custom blend test. Before this I had it on a 9/10 divider and it would fail on one core after two minutes, but I could play BF 2 and Obivion for hours without any problems! So I am rather hacked off that now it is prime stable it is crashing in BF 2 and oblivion every now and then. I thought the whole point of prime was to ensure that it is STABLE. I think I remember reading on this forum something similar with someone else, anyone got any ideas?

Prime95 just doesnt get your components as hot as Oblivion or BF2 does.

Nor does ATItool make the Graphics card and chipset get as hot as those games will either.

And I think this is the reason why we can have prime95 / atitool / 3dmark stable systems yet still get crashes in real games.

I just stick my PC on the windowcill now, sick of these problems myself. Cool air sorts it for me though :)

Games are a bit like a full system test... so I would check that there arent other areas that are causing the problem other than just the RAM/CPU... Make sure there arent any other weak links that the games are finding but Prime doesnt.

It would be a bit like someone who is able to benchpress 120kg, but can't run more than 100metres without running out of breath... The whole system needs to be 'physically fit' in order to get the benefits of the hardwork.

This is what i have found with my system anyways :)

Just some thoughts.

Could it be driver related? I've had a lot of issues which have come down to dual core issues, the need for hotfixes or nvidia driver problems.

Have you recently installed any new drivers?

Maybe try posting on the nvidia forum to see if someone is experiencing something similar.

An unstable OC may corrupt your OS apparently. Maybe that has already happened. Might be worth uninstalling graphics and sound drivers properly, and re-installing.

As I say just some thoughts.

Thanks for the advice, however, when I revert back to my previous "unstable" OC I can play with out any bsod on both of the games I have mentioned. From this I can tell there is no OS corruption or driver issues. It's just really annoying. Tried last night to lower the voltage for the vcore and run the same blend test but one core died after an hour.

You should post your RAM timings so everyone can see what you have. There may be something in there someone can point out for you. I know for a fact that if 2 people look at one problem, they will see two sides of a solution.

Can't pretend to know the ins and outs, however in games I'd guess you are talking about an interaction between cpu and graphics card. Basically what I'm guessing here is that games stress is a whole different ball game to prime stress.

I've experienced proof of this running cinebench. In the opengl examples I get a higher score in certain fields, with a higher cpu overclock. Anyway enough of that waffle. All I would say is keep an open mind. :) You might find that a different driver works better.

Just another thought. Can't remember who, but someone here mentioned that they had to up the PCI Express Frequency to get stability. I haven't experienced any difference in touching this setting myself but maybe trying a setting up to 105 might be worth a try.

Anyway, hope you sort it :)

Ok great now I have a new problem. On my prime stable for 12 hours settings it now reboots everytime I load windows. Win xp boots displays the desktop and everything works and moves but after about 30 - 60 seconds it reboots. Anyone encountered this?!

Well, first a heads up: 9/10 divider actually is 11/12. From that point, when you are using 9x278 9:10 divider your ram speed is: 250.20. Whereas while using 9x278 5:6 divider, ur ram speed is 227.45.

Ur ram is giving crap at 250, thats why you are prime stable with 5:6 divider (228 mhz).

After that note, unfortunately I am also getting TONS of crashes in oblivion in last 3 days (regardless of stock settings or overclocked). I am trying to find other culprits that is causing crashes like code packs, video drivers, directx issues, etc. Annoying... Try everything at stock settings (cpu and gpu) and if you are still getting crashes (like me), well, welcome to club!!

EDIT: try trc=9, trfc=16

Please could you post more info like:

Vcore

Vdimm

Video drivers

Monitor+resolution+refreshrate

PCI-E speed

Exact video card model (is it pre-OCed)

From what I've read, it can be:

1. Video driver related

2. PCI-E speed, set it to 104/105 maybe that helps

3. 7900GT/X are known to fail at "stock" speeds. If your card is one of those pre-OCed ones you should try to set it to nvidia stock speeds and see what happens.

And for the 12h settings being now not stable, maybe you didn't set it correctly after all the tests?

Press F8, get into safe mode, uninstall video driver and reboot. Reinstall video driver and see what happens. If that way doesn't work, you should install Rivatuner and set the card at nvidia stock 7900GT speeds if your card is pre-OCed.

Hope this helps :)
