SIREX Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 I was just wandering what you guys prefer. Increases in FSB or lowere FSB and higher multupliers. Also I have always bult AMD I am thinking about building a pentium system and was wanting some input on what I should get. I would like to OC it. I don't want the cheapest just something in the middle. Basiclally a mobo and chip reccomendation. I already have extra of everything else. Thanks
GmAz Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 on my system, I have a 333 Mhz FSB chip, so I try to keep it under 200Mhz. I have my multiplier at 12.5, which it is stock 11. It helps keep the temperatures down with a lower FSB.
ravix Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 Well, system performance goes up the most with fsb so that takes priority with me. I generally set the FSB as high as I can get it, and then drop back a little if needed to increase the multiplier. Frankly, I'd rather have fast memory and cpu than a super fast cpu and normal memory.

GTSticky Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 (edited) Take a look at the price breakdown for CPUs (from Pricewatch.com) $592 - Pentium 4 3.2GHz 800 $379 Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800 $365 Pentium 4 3.06GHz 533 $261 Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800 $242 - Pentium 4 2.8GHz 533 $194 Pentium 4 2.6GHz 800 $179 Pentium 4 2.6GHz 533 $169 - Pentium 4 2.53GHz If you can, get the 2.8 (800) for $261 and overclock it just a little like AyoKona and I are doing with our systems. Saving 100 bucks isn't worth having to overclock a 2.4 and deal with all that imo. FanATIc205 Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 (edited) well with intel cpus you cant change multis but on amds you can . on a amd cpu you want to lowest possible multi with the highest possible fsb . the higherthe fsb the more bandwidth the system gets wich makes apps and games run faster . look at what amd did with the 3000+ theres 2 one uses a fsb of 333 the other 400fsb the 333fsb 3000+ is 2170mhz and the 400fsb part is 2100mhz so you get better perfromnce with a higher fsb 2 amd cpus both running at the same mhz speed but one has a slower fsb will not be as fast as the cpu using the higher fsb but they both have the same mhz speed i builta comp fora friend with watercooling with a 2.4c p4 and a abit ic7-g and got it to 300fsb and the cpu was @3.6. if you are going to intel route i would not get anything less than a 800mhz fsb p4. the 2.4 is the cheapest of the new 800mhz fsb p4s and a 865pe based mother board like the is7 of for the price of the cpu and mobo for intel procs you can get a amd cpu 2500+ @2200mhz motherboard and 512megs of ram and still come out chepaer with roguhly the same performance as a 800mhz fsb p4 @3.0ghz Edited September 30, 2003 by fanATIc1205
Will Smith Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 I know will smith hit 300 X 4 on his p4 setup. That is sweet. air cooled too. If i didn't have this !@#$ intel board i would probably try to do the same. He took a screen shot on this link so you can see everything hes running. HAHA I am famous. hehe........ IF you gonna go intel. Abit board do very well but Asus's P4P800 regular or Deluxe just have it beat. GEt yourself a 2.4C which is 800(200) fsb. and get that asus mobo. now I got 300 on air but results will vary. u might need water or vapor all luck of the draw. that is my recomendation . bigred Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 so far you can't unlock the 64bit amd chips. we'll find out what's under that heat spreader later on this afternoon. the workstation guys fried a 3400+ so they're going cut it up and take a little look... sad that it takes frying an ES chip to find out

He uses ASUS SK8N with the new 1003.003 BIOS that allow you to change the multiplier. The multiplier is set to 14x up from the default 11x but the current version of CPUZ cannot detect the actual multiplier as yet.)
