ravix Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 I was wondering today if people see any significant increase in case temps when they install a duct that goes straight to the processor instead of the rest of the case. I understand that the processor is important, but isn't it also important to keep your memory, video cards and hard drive cool as well. I was just thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of having a duct. with duct: Cooler processor, 1 less instake fan for case without duct: Case temps a little cooler due to 1 more fan used as intake, also causing the prcoessor to become cooler, but not as significantly. Basically, I was wondering if anyone had before and after temps of both their case and processor from when they installed a duct. syneze Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 I made a homemade duct with some vinyl dryer ducting i picked up at the hardware store. My CPU temps didn't drop at all, and my system temp went up 1 degree. It didn't hinder any airflow to my videocard or hard drive though, they both have separate fans blowing on them. Some people swear they get like 4-5 degrees lower but who knows, guess it's just something you will have to test for yourself. I like what you've done, but does you ducting mod have 1 or 2 fans & are they high cfm? How does the duct attach to the HsF, or does it just hover in front/above it? <_<
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 I had a duct that hovers directly over the HSF but I took it off and installed two exhaust(one-80mm/one-60mm) fans and one intake(80mm) My cpu idle/load temps were about 2-4oC lower w/o the duct (depending on the room temp)
Rabbit Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 I'm about to do an overclock and am thinking about adding a duct or two to help cool my CPU. I have not made or used a duct before so I'm wondering if it will affect it much. What I'm thinking about doint is putting a duct from a side fan to the CPU (will still have another side fan blowing under the vid card). And possibly another duct going from the back of the heat sink to on of the rear exhaust fans, however there is not much room back there (I will still have another exhaust fan right by the one covered by the duct and the PSU right above). And I'm thinking if I leave the other side open it will help to keep the pressure right due to varried fan speeds. I dont think that airflow to the case will be a problem since there would still be two in front, and one on the side, back and top open. My question is how much this would help the cooling of the CPU (I figure it would be kind of like the person that put the fan directly on the side of the heatsink). Also what material would be best or easiest to use?
