teggs11 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Hello everyone, My exhaust fan power connection (fan2) on my mobo has stopped working. I've tried 2 different fans in the fan2 and fan4 power connections on my mobo and both worked in fan4 but didn't in fan2. Is there any way i can fix it or is it a RMA job? Any comments appreciated. bldegle2 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 onboard PS pinouts are famous for this, no matter who makes the MB....and the amp/watt draw of the fan has a lot to do with the failure too, i believe .3amp is the max rating............ two things, either a reostat bay addon, you control yourself the RPMS, or just wire it to a four pin molex with a 4pin to 3pin converter to start with and bypass the MB pinouts from the get go. baldy Share this post Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Smoken Joe Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Using any fan other than the stock AMD one or the chipset on the mother boards is not really a great idea less juce for more inportant things like the CPU and ram. Just do it directly from the PSU or with a controller sunbeam makes a great one for only about 11 bucks from SVC. See angry's stickie. I like the 7 volt trick too it is free and few fans really need all the juce unless you have a Intel or cheap case. You can go into bios and make sure that it is at full juce even at cool temps many fans are just going to have too much draw for the MB though they just are not designed for high output fans. LemonyLime Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I agree with Smoken Joe....but here's some food for thought anyway.... My fan on fan2 stops sometimes, but I know why it does this. In the bios i had it set to "turn fan completely off" at like 25c but sometimes in the morning the case is below that temp so the fan does not come on for a while until the computer warms up and 25c is the lowest setting. uwackme Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I think there is a SMD fuse on each of the fan headers, as well as the USB headers. It's a little greenish thing, looks like a wider resistor. You could always get a replacement from DigiKey if you are handy at soldering. Or just short a jumper across the broken fuse.... just avoid shorts in the future. I've seen it posted on here a million times not to use the fan connections on the motherboard to run your fans. I'm surprised Angry hasn't trashed this thread already.
