Did I break my cpu?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Recently bought a Koolance Exos 2 unit to enjoy watercooling. Installed it this weekend. B***stard of DFI board requires you to remove the mobo to keep the backing plate in place, and I thought, cool, chance to replace the stock thermal compund with some decent stuff. Before this all working on air cooling without a problem. On removal of chip the chip fell slightly out of the socket, but no pin breaks noted. On trying to reinsert into the ZIF it refused, and on closer inspection I found a few (2-3) slightly bent pins. Nothing that a small screwdriver and steady hands didnt sort. Replaced chip and tied up with watercooling... good to go. When I start the system all 4 diagnostic leds come on and doesnt proceed from there. Now, did I fry my chip or was my cautious pin bending too vigourous!!! 4 leds means power applied so it seems that the cpu has been a casualty. Everyone else agrees??? Everything else remained the same in the system, which worked fine before my venture to water...

Any info appreciated...

I did a similar thing three times to my bro's venice. came out with the hsf.

If th pins wereslightly bent, I owuld not think that could kill your cpu, but it is a possiblity.

Did the watercooling go weill..? you didnt spill and water drops on the mobo right?

what you could do is, well, as always you could clear cmos and try.. or not you might have to put your cpu on a working rig and see if it works.. goodluck bro..
