Is This Possible?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it was possible to take a screen off of

an old laptop and use it on a pc??? I have a mini pc and I was

thinkin I could take the screen off this useless laptop I have

and some how wire it up, or maybe it'd allow me to use an

external video input on the laptop but I doubt it...

anyone heard of this being attempted???

Anything is possible. But i have heard of several complications with doing this.

1. There is no standardized connection to use to hook up to a computer

2. You would have to figure out a way to not only wire, but match up the tons of little wires for a connection to your computer.

3. Getting a power source to power your monitor(remember, if detached from laptop, where is the power source?)

4. Something else really hard to do that will prevent it.

Unless ive missed some major advancement in the removal and using of lcd screens, i think it would be extremely hard. Anyone know if and how its been done?

That being said.... Good luck! let us know how it goes!

doin a google search and I see some things on here that Im checkin out...

looks a little complicated from one persons guide... I wish there was some way to

go straight from the lcd to a standard vga connector...

I may just end up doin this in my comp repair class once I get all the comps

fixed that she has sittin around for me...

have to know a few major things to make it work. 1 the pin out. if you know what wires corrispond with the pins on a standard dvi or vga plug (depends on the screen you're using... toshiba and dell screens are digital). and second you need to know the power requirements. you may want to try the old FCC id # trick for it and see if the ORIGINAL maker of the screen will give you the info you need. I've seen this done several times by a friend of mine. his usual mounting method is the side pannel of a large atx tower which does look awsome.

good luck

Im opening it up and on the bottom of the mobo theres like an lcd port

on it... is there ussually a video input on these things or would that most likely

be some kinda of output??? if its an input would there be an easier way to get

this workin w/ out taking the lcd off of the laptop like a vga to lcd cable or somethin???

when i built the "iMike" i seriously considered going this route, but trying to adapt a propietary laptop lcd to vga vid card was too much of a hassle, even as a job i was willing to farm out to a professional.

besides, laptop screen aren't too spectacular to begin with, image quality wise.

I know but Im just using it on a really small computer

for like web browsing or whatever.... I want it to be portable

so I can just back it all in a backpack and hook it up at

someones house or school...

I just realized how wierd that is that you made the imike and I was lookin at your

guide to it for a long time yesterday and today to try and figure out if what

you did was similar to what Im doin.... I've been lookin at this:

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-160-1.htm

heh.... small world I guess....

but ya when I was readin that I was wondering what kind of cable you

were using to connect the vga to the lcd??? is it the same connector

as what Im seeing on the bottom of my laptop??? I'd post a pic

but I dont have time at the moment.... also did ya make the cable yourself

or was it somethin you bought???
