MrBurns Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 I need a new CD-RW drive (see this thread), and I have a few questions: 1.) Does 8MB buffer make a big difference in performance and buffer underrun protection compared to 2MB? The cheapest 8MB drive costs 15$ more than the cheapest 2MB drives, and only supports 24x on CD-RWs, but one of the cheap 2MB drives supports 32x? Is it worth the 15$ more? The cheapest 8MB drive (52x), I have seen: Samsung SW-252B Retail 2.) If I buy a 2MB drive: I have found 3 52x burners, that cost all the same where I live (about 44$). Which do you think, is the best? Dont post anything about newegg, because I dont want to buy online. I could also get slower burners, but this doesnt make a sense, because they also cost the same. The burners: LiteOn LTR-52327S Bulk, available as retail for about $1.50 more AOpen CRW5224 Retail (91.3ED37.011/055) BenQ CRW-5224P Bulk (99.B0512.0F1) The LiteOn is the only one, which burns CD-RWs at 32x (all others use 24x). 3.) I never have seen any CD-RWs, that support more than 12x. Have you seen CD-RWs, that support more than 24x?
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 (edited) Personally I dont use CDRW disks much (I only have one which came with my drive heh) I would purchase the Lite-On or an LG drive they are silent..more or less, affordable(you can purchase a 52x24x52x for about $40) Edited September 24, 2003 by O(V)eGA_l2el)
Bosco Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 I have never really noticed a difference between a 8MB and a 2MB, I am very happy with my LG 52X32X52
TypicalSloan Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 the absolute best now is the plextor premium, it comes with lots of features, its own burning program that works great, and its a solidly built piece of hardware. ClayMeow Posted September 25, 2003 Posted September 25, 2003 I have never really noticed a difference between a 8MB and a 2MB, I am very happy with my LG 52X32X52 yeah, i don't think cache's really matter that much on your cdrw drive. If you're concerned about stability just go one setting lower than the max. So if you get a 52x, you can burn at 48x which is still very fast, and will be more stable. also, i use nero (came with my cdrw drive), and it avoids buffer underuns. LobbDogg Posted September 25, 2003 Posted September 25, 2003 I've used a Yamaha 8mb cache and other 2mb cache drives. And with our systems nowadays I cannot say that I noticed any difference with one over the other in terms of stability or creating bad discs. I think that the only difference now would be when doing a drive to drive copy when the drives are on the same IDE controller. The 8mb probably wouldn't take as long. Our computers are generaly fast enough that it doesn't really need a full 8mb.

Some_Guy_ Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 I have an LG with the 8 MB cache and it works great. Never made a coaster yet. Having said that, modern burning programs also have the ability to reduce and /or eliminate buffer underruns anyway.
