Cheesewheel Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Ran Prime95 last night (about 7 hours), and according to MBM5 the CPU went as far as 51C under load. That's 15 degrees higher than it's idle temp, which is 35. The PWMIC idles at 46 and gets all the way up to 60. I haven't done any clocking yet either. Is such a big difference standard for PWMIC and CPU? I wanted to clock my processor up slightly so it will take full advantage of new RAM I have at DDR500, but not if it's going to burn things. The chipset only goes up 4 degrees too o_O
Kakarot Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I added a big typhoon heatsink and arctic silver 5 to my rig... idle 29ish, under full load 38. So it is quite common. If you want to overclock, I would add a new hsf and some cable management, maybe a fan or 2. If you overclock you will be in the high 50s or worse. And that is no good. Heh, just read your setup... seems you have a nice hs: maybe play with your intake/exhaust fans to see if you can get your temps down. UncleDavid218 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 It could be that your heatsink is not seated properly on top of the CPU.
Cheesewheel Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I hate to reseat it because it is so large... how can I tell if it is on there right just by looking at it?
Cheesewheel Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I bit the bullet and reseated the heat sink. Cleaned the faces of the CPU and heatsink and reapplied AS5. CPU temp is idling at 38C :/
twivel Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 The opteron 165 comes with a great heatpipe-heatsink, the fan just runs a bit slow (in my experience, it never went over 3k RPM). If you added a faster fan - or got an adapter that lets you put a 120mm on it, you'd probably be able to save yourself some money and give a decent boost to your cooling. Cheesewheel Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 That is a 120mm on it, I have seen it go up to 15k RPM. Should I set it to run full blast at all times?
twivel Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Sorry, I should have read your sig, that's what it's there for.
Cheesewheel Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 :spam: It seems to be worse than before. Maybe I put too little AS5 on it? They said 1.5 short grains of rice, and I put that (or maybe a tiny bit more) on.
syar2003 Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 A 15°C rise from idle to 100% load is not bad . Look at thees compared coolers : http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/d...ol-comp_12.html http://www.silentpcreview.com/article267-page4.html
Cheesewheel Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Oh, good. I suppose the idle temp will drop as the AS5 cures. 200 hours is it?
