Are these normal temps at idle or way too high?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm starting to think there is something extremely wrong with my pc temps.

mbm5 displays the cpu temp 35-36 degrees celcius at idle (sometimes it reaches 40), pwmic is 43degrees celcius and nf4 chipset is 55 degrees celcius.

Is this normal for a pc with my cooling? My pc is not overclocked.

Case airflow? Could you maybe clean up some cabling if you haven't already, maybe check to see that your fans are working together and not against each other (ie: intake vs exhaust balance)

What are your load temps? Idle temps are a little high and can always be cooler ;)

what is your ambient room temps?

i know the dual cores run a tad hotter...my old x2 3800 ran about the same

55c for the chipset seems high...did you remove it and apply as5?

also you say 40c at idle sometimes...a tad high, if you were always idle at 35c that would be normal.

perhaps removing that zalman beast, and re-applying the as5 might be worth a try.

It does sound a tad high. I have a 4800 x2, slightly overclocked. Vcore=1.44V and running at 297*9 = 2673MHz. My idle temp is 28 deg C with a room temp around 21 deg C.

I'm using a XP90 heatsink with a 92mm Panaflo fan + an airduct to the side of my case where I have a 120mm Thermaltake case fan pushing in air as well. The airduct + Thermaltake fan does help a bit, but I think it was just 1-2 deg C when I tested with/without.

pwmic is 42-44 deg C at idle.

Chipset is 46-48 deg C

(I've done the AS5 mod on the chipset as Angry described in a post here on the forum)

Zalmans are known to have high air circulation to the PWIC and Ram areas so your temps do sound high. The chipset temps are average if you browse throughout the modifications forum. Typically the video card exhausts hot air right into the poor sucker.

How is your ambient temperatures and inside-case temperatures? My guess is this is your most likely culpritt.

Hi thanks for your replies.

I just ran 2 instances of prime95 for 8 hours last night and mbm5 recorded the highs which were 53 degrees for the cpu, 53 degrees for PWMIC and 58 degrees for the NF4 Chipset. All my cabling is tidy inside the case. Btw the case is a lian-li PC-6070B Plus, there's a diagram of the fans on this page

http://www.lian-li.com/Product/Chassis/M_C_S_PC-6070.htm

How do i find out the case temps and ambient room temps? i don't think i have any AS5. I kinda bought all the parts and got the shop to build it for me.

Maybe i should have a look into the AS5 chipset mod.

Do they have the Zalman screwed down all the way? What concerns me is if the temps reported could be 10 degrees off. You may be idling in the 40's and loading in the 60's. I have an Ultra D too and these are the temps I get from Smart Guardian:

This is impossible since it is 21c in my room right now. You really can't trust this software temp monitoring software.

The CPU duct inlet is in the back of the case with all the hot air exhaust on your case?

This could really explain hot temps very easily. You may be recycling hot air. Try using a house fan to clear out the rear area of computer and check temps. I bet you some drop in CPU temps immediately.

A simple way to tell if your inside case temps are to high is to remove the side panel. If your temps drop significantly you now know you need to re-think your air circulation path. If your temps rise/stay the same/ or drop 1~2 degrees than you have a different issue.

Side panel ducts are popular for this very reason. Heh, reminds me of a case mod i seen once with a snorkel on the outside of the case to get cold fresh air...

I would try to maximize the air inlet path from the front of the case. Most likely a duct or chamber to the video card/ chipset path.

The zalman is screwed in nice and snug. I was going to download smart guardian, to see if i get similar temps, but noticed it's not for win x64

Hawk: i don't have a house fan at this moment in time, however i did remove the side panel and now my temps are as follows:

CPU temp: 32-33 degrees, does jump up to 34-38 degrees at the time of writing this and then back down to 32

PWMIC = 38-39 degrees

NF4 Chipset: 51-52 degrees

I don't know much about cooling, but i've spent all this money on mr zalman (cpu and gpu) why isn't he doing his job.

What does this mean?

Also, what's the deal with the dfi chipset fan, it's running at 4686 rpm, normally it's 7000 all the time

Well, your results really did not suprise me. To put in perspective the temperature drop was the difference between a hot day and a nice day... Heh. Three degree Celsius is just about 9 degrees Farenheit (standard measurement in USA) which is a difference you can feel. The inlet paths are really hindered by heat sources. The CPU path will be tough to improve so let me think on that some and perhaps somebody will post mods they have seen. The front of case inlet path is critical for you to maximize.

1. Is your harddrive in front of the inlet path at the bottom front of your case? If so this is good for cooling a harddrive but adds heat before getting to your most sensitive parts (video/chipset). This path really needs to be unobstructed or improved velocity. Bigger fan, higher rpms', ducting, or case cutting. I would make sure the inlet path on the case itself was cut out as to not be restrictive. See Angry's mod on the link here:

http://www.angrygames.com/More_Mods.htm

http://www.angrygames.com/

2. You mentioned the fan speeds changing after removing panel. Good indication that your not at 100% voltage to your fans at your "high" temps. Try going into the bios and setting your fans to go full or 100% at a lower temp. The chipset fan can be quite annoying when changing speeds but when it is always set to 100% or some other value than it can become just some constant noise in the background which seems to less annoying after time.

*I prefer to go 100% at 30` Celsius and use silent fans for cooling or a manual fan control module.

3. Check for any software settings that can override the bios fan control as well. Such as smart guardian or motherboard monitor or video card software.

(edit) 4. Arctic Cooler is a superior cooling solution for the video card because it exhausts the hot air out of the case. The Zalman can be just as effective but you need to ensure the hot air is forced toward your blower exhaust fan. Get creative with cardboard prototyping and test your results. I am assuming the blower fan is exhaust by the picture of the Lian Li case you linked...If it is not, then maybe you could open a couple of PCI slot covers in the case and have a fan suck hot air out? (with enough creative juices this could be golden)

(Edit) 5. At this point you would have done the simple mods. For more extensive cooling solutions you would more than likely need a Dremel tool and some quality time. Check out my acrylic solution. I lowered most of my temps by 10 to 20` Celsius with some planning and grunt work. My goals were to keep everything below 50` Celsius and ended up keeping everything except the video card under 40` Celsius under benchmarks. My video card at stock timings I can keep at 42 or so playing BF2 but I choose to overclock to 54` Celsius range.

Well it's night time here so it's a bit colder. Temps are now:

CPU: 29 degrees

PWMIC: 34 degrees

NF4: 48 degrees

I have never seen temps in the 20's before haha. Thanks a lot :) My hard drives (3 of them) are in the bottom front of the case. The smart HD reading on mbm5 is 34 degrees. (still got the side panel off)

Will look into the fan settings in bios, seem them before and will change .them to fully be on all the time. I kinda like the noise. Helps me sleep at night

However there's a sad end to this story, i appreciate your help with all the modding etc but turns out i have to fly to malta for 6months so i'll be needing a laptop instead!

So unfortunately i'll have to sell this pc and no doubt you will hear the new owner on the forums whining about the temps and all the other problems i've had

Thanks
