Speeding Up The Post

Recommended Posts

My computer boots up fairly quickly, so it's not REALLY necessary to make it any faster (if possible), but i DID notice that it waits a few seconds on the screen about RAID, waiting to see if i hit F4 to set it up or something. I don't use RAID, so is there a way to turn that off in the bios or something? (preferably a way in which i can later turn it on if i do decide to go raid). Hey, every few seconds count, right? ;)

Ya, that annoyed me too. Move this jumper to the opposite of what it is set at now. Good luck!

thanks. i wasn't sure if it involved SATA or not. I didn't think the a7n8x had ide raid, so that's why i didn't know how to get rid of that. I don't feel like opening up my case just yet. I'll wait til i get my UV lights in a couple of days and do it then.

BTW, you'd think by now i'd learn:

When you have microsoft or cpu questions - ask bigred

When you have asus a7n8x questions - ask andrusk

heh

heh, i like that one

But yeah, when you see the raid thing you know its sata raid cause the a7n8x deluxe doesnt have ide raid(something which i consider to be a downfall in its design) Oh well. Its still a great board. Except for the occasional bios corruption  heh

If you want to speed up your POST juuuuust a little bit more, and you have money to blow, you can buy an ATA drive controller card and insert it and run your HD's on the CS (Cable Select) jumper. From what i've read that increases your POST time. Ive got my HD and DVD both on CS (i only have 1 HD and 1 optical drive FOR NOW) and mine POST's like a beast (if i blink, i miss the chance to enter my BIOS haha) This is really only if you care THAT much about your cutting down your POST time.

well no need for an ata card now. wow did my computer boot up fast. my monitor didn't even go on until RIGHT before the windows logon screen.....left me wondering if my computer even posted at all. crap andrusk, thanks for the info....i'll have to act quicker now if i ever need to enter the bios. heh.

(i will say i've only booted once since changing the jumper, so it could just be a fluke...i'll have to see if it's always this fast now)

I need advice on this one! My new A7n8x deluxe posts & boots OK, but once I'm on the desktop it suddenly stops & loads stuff, it takes ages before I can do anything useful, is this Norton antivirus & firewall causing this or system restore, it also takes a while load game levels etc. DMA is on & nothing to remark on in system devices/hardware tab.

i have norton antivirus 2002, and it doesn't hang, so i don't think it's that...although i don't have a firewall. You can go into "run" on your start menu and type "msconfig", then go to the "startup" and "services" tabs and go thru that stuff and see if you can close any of it. I know i went into the "gpedit.msc" when i first installed winxp and disabled windows messenger completely, but then when i went into msconfig, i still found it there and thus, disabled them (one in startup, and one in services). The time it takes for windows to be fully loaded (all the services, bkgd crap, etc), is very fast now. I also disabled "netpumperIEproxy", so it could just be that, but worth a shot, right? Just make sure you don't disable any critical stuff. If you don't know what it is, leave it enabled.
