i read some thing on a foroum today about dorvak being better and you can type faster and stuff... so, would i want to witch to dorvak layout? they said the qwerty layout was for typewriters so they didnt jam (ive been thinking abut this for a while, and wonderig why it is still the standard) if i do switch, it won te hard ot learn bec i dont know how to "touch-type" that well anyway... as anyone who is in the chat roms at the same time as me should know that.

another thing, Ive beeen looking for a one handed keyboard... i thought i saw it on thinkgeek but i cant dind it anywhere... it was only the left half of the keys and you heald down spacebar to type the other half... thats not explaining it well, but it hink that would make "h" be *spacebar* + "a" key .... i dunno, but reviews and stuff said it was just as easy as normal typing... and then id eb able to drink coffee while on the coputer!! yay... i like coffee.... ...

bah somehow the "insert" key keeps going off and i go back to fix errors and its delieting eveything...

I heard about dorvak a while back and read some stuff

on why it's better but to me its like if you already have

somethin programmed into your brain like a key layout

and you don't ever look at your keyboard when typin

like me then Im pretty sure it's gonna be hard to get

it out of your head....

its all about what people are use to. back in the day people learned on the manual type write, but when powered ones came out, everyone already knew the qwerty layout, so if they were to go back, everyone would have to relearn. so it was just easier to keep it the way it was.

something iteresting. at work we have a keyboard at every postion, it's used to retreive flight progress information and other things. the system has been around since the 50's, when it first came out the computer wasn't able to keep up with people's typing if the keyboard was laied out in the qwerty method. so they arranged it alphabtically about 7 letters to a row in order to slow people down. well now the computers is able to keep up with a higher rate if information flow, but people are use to the way it is, so it stays.

QWERTY keyboards are called so because the first six letters on your keyboard, starting from the upper left, are Q-W-E-R-T-Y. The same holds for DVORAK, where the first six letter keys from the upper left are D-V-O-R-A-K.

For me, both are pronounced similarly. The first letter is pronounced "as is", and the rest is read like a word. So it's "Q-werty" (not "kwerty") and "divorak", but that's me.
