How Important Is Buffered Ram?

I purchased a comp a while back from a company for fairly cheap, and of course I got a few cheap components. Anyway, I wanna see how much difference it makes using two Modules, instead of one to utilize my DDR memory. I ran Sisoft Sanra, and it's telling me that for ram 512mb or higher, it should be Registered/buffered, and be ECC/Parity, because what I have now isn't. I'm just wondering, if I buy more ram, should I try to sell what I have, and go for 2X256, or just buy another 512 with the above mentioned stats? Thanks for your help.

okay, fairly simple. 512mb dimms come both ways, 1 and 2 gb dimms ONLY come buffered. they're generally for servers and high end workstations (reason the opteron REQUIRES IT). So if you're gonna run 1gb or larger dimms you don't have a choice...
