rezdj Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 so i sent back my Opteron 165 Dual Core CPU and my DFI Ultra-D NF4 which was defective to zipzoomfly. I get an email saying this from them: "Dear Customer, We've received the parts back from you on 3/15/06 via USPS. During our testing, we found out the CPU and the motherboard are not compatible. We can still offer a replacement for the motherboard since it was tested defective. We can process a refund on the CPU and you can re-order. Please let us know, so we can process this RMA correctly. Thank you" i was really confused by this so i gave them a call. I asked what it means that its not compatible, and they told me that the Opteron 165 wont work with a Ultra-D. After this i just started laughing and hung up. But honestly...wtf??

Nehil Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 I wonder why they don't support them, is it becuse there is a real problem with them or is it to blame something in case there would be any problems ? Anyway I run my 170 without trouble.
HanzoRazor Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Opteron 170 are server CPUs, you need to use them in officially supported server motherboards in order to receive support on them. They don't support them because AMD has the Opteron line targetted for work station and server uses and the X2 line targetted for home users. Exactly. Zipzoomfly can't recommend an Opteron for any board like this. Its not just DFI, its ASUS, Abit, Gigabytre, all of them. Some larger companies like ASUS offer workstations that do 'Officially' support the Opteron because it meets requirements set by AMD - namely its not for home use. DFI's official stance is we do not (cannot) support Opteron 939 cpu's officially on any of our desktop motherboards. This is per AMD. however unofficially, as you can see in these forums, Opteron cpu's work just fine. And if you look around at everyone's signatures, you will find MANY MANY Opteron 165's and Lanparty NF4 motherboards (regardless of Ultra-D, SLI-D, SLI-DR, SLI-DR Expert, SLI-DR Venus, Infinity, etc). I think ZZF is smoking crack

Send me a brand new DFI board and refund me for the cpu so i can buy a new one. I was just extremely confused by the email. Angry_Games Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Well they told me the computer wont turn on. thats when i hung up. i can't diagnose what the problem might be but if you get it all replaced and run into the same situation again, just send the mobo/cpu/mem to me and let me take a look at it
