surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I went to install a new hsf today, and when I pulled it out, the processor came with, and for the first time I noticed that the plastic piece under where the processor sits had a small crack in it. It causes one side of the piece to be a tad higher than the other. When starting up the computer, all 4 of the red debug lights stay on, detecting that no CPU can be read. Would this be enough to ruin my motherboard from detecting the CPU? If so, could I fix it by myself, or could I buy a replacement piece somewhere? Thanks, Jesse
supraboytt Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 does the crack encompass the part where the holes for the cpu pins are? maybe you could take a picture for us so we can get a better look

surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Here's a blurry picture, but I drew a line where the crack was. It looks like it splits down between 3 or 4 of the holes.
red930 Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Wow...I'm not sure if thats fixable by you unless you're a master solderer. You might be abe to take it to a local computer repair shop...but I don't think there is much you can do to fix it. Chances are the crack caused some shorting between internal connections in the block. Best guess I've got anyways.... Does your CPU appear to be okay? surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 My cpu is fine. I'm just wondeirng if it's possible to fix it by myself or buy a replace part for it? x_X
supraboytt Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Wow I gotta ask, how did that happen? Is there a way you can take that whole cpu slot (the white thing with holes) out. If you can, then maybe you can buy a dead mobo on ebay or something and replace it? If its stuck on there solid, then I don't know how else you could fix that. Alternatively, and Im not recommending you do this at all, but you can buy another mobo of the same type at bestbuy or something, switch out the mobos and return it. Just remember to change the product code stickers on the mobos. Again, this would be a terrible thing to do and im not recommending it. surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Haha, it MAY have to come to do that. But I'm not sure if it comes out. I'm scared to force it in worries that the entire thing will crack. I'm not sure how it happened. When I took out my HSF today, the processor came out as well and I noticed it. Could it have happened while the processor was still in? If not, if must have happened today at some point...
supraboytt Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Wait, your processor came out with your heatsink while you pulled it out? It was attached to your heatsink!?? That explains it. You were supposed to run your computer for a while to warm the thermal paste, then take the heatsink off, then UNHOOK the metal arm, THEN take your proc out. Otherwise the thermal paste will make your cpu stick to the heatsink. Wow. Check the pins on the proc, they might be bent due to the stress of being ripped out while still locked. surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Wow...well, that's what I get when friends help me. = So now the question. How to fix it...? Edit: The pins appear to be perfectly straight.
supraboytt Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I would first take it to a computer repair shop. If anything can be done, they might have some ideas. If not.... your only option would be a new mobo. btw Some great friends you have there lol
surrealwaking Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Haha, thanks for the info, even it wasn't the answer I was looking for. Thank you all so much, especially you, supraboytt. <
