chipset 50C on idle... vantec iceberq4... weird

hey guys,

i'm never particular about my temperature until recently i started taking a look at smartguardian. i realised my chipset is running at 49-50C on idle!!!

 

few mths back i changed the chipset fan as it died. got a vantec iceberq4 because the evercool was out of stock. i installed it quite lousily, for one because the 2nd plastic pin didn't go in completely (however, from how i see it, the heatsink is sitting on the chip properly, just that the 2nd clip can't fully clip behind the board). 2ndly, i didn't use AS5, just the TC that came with the vantec.

 

i don't think 50C on idle is NORMAL at all right? so what can the matter be? i just ordered the AS5... so definately i'm going to try refit the fan again. anyone with links to how to fit a vantec iceberq4 properly? mine definately had fitting problems...

 

can there be any reason why the temp is so high? the cpu is at 38C and the other temp figure is 48C... room temp is about 27C. chipset fan running at 5000+rpm (max) and CPU fan is running at 4000+rpm.

Ambient is damn hot 33c . My cpu is 37 idle and my chipset is 54c. Bit of a worry. Volts for chipset is 1.65 though. Might try and drop that a tad.

 

You have aircon Darkdashing? Cost a bit, but I think I might shell out on an A/C.

My chipset is running at 51C max and average is ~46C, the max rpm it ran at in a 3 day period is 4200rpm, this is with the stock fan in a cold room (18C)

 

50C idle seems a bit high, perhaps the Vantec isn't making good contact, on the other hand a ambient temo of 27C is quite high so that could account for the higher chipset temperature

But in order for good heat transfer, the heatsnk needs to be putting some pressure on the chip. If only one push pin is mounted properly, it's not gonna put any pressure at all.

Exactly.

 

I would pull the cooler, clean it and the chipset with isopropyl alcohol, and then apply some AS5 to the chipset and then reseat it properly. Make sure not to put more AS5 than the size of a small grain of uncooked rice. Too much thermal paste will simply insulate the chipset rather than transfer heat. I just don't think that it is fully seated so you're getting poor heat transfer because I am getting 44° C with the stock cooler.

With IceBerQ4, a dremel would be your best friend! I used it to expand the 2nd hole. The 2nd hole is then too big (ha ha my first time with a dremel) for push pin so I replaced it with nut & bolt (don't screw it too tight). I also used the dremel to file one spot so it wouldn't touch anything on the board. Idle is 38.

hmmm

i guess i'll have to dremel it then... will try when the as5 arrive...

 

btw, where can i get isopropyl? i know acetone is from nail polish...

 

can i just use scentless nailpolish? my fren's doesn't write the ingredients there... and i've no use for a whole bottle of nail polish... heh heh

I also used vantec iceberq4, temp load 41-42c...

for cpu , I prefer using vantec's paste then AS5, in my mine vantec cooler then AS5, now I'm trying Geil...
