Questions regarding RAID 0

Recommended Posts

i am gonna buy 2 raptors 74GB tomorrow and i was wondering if anyone could help

i am gonna set them up as raid0 using nvraid.

i have read angrys post on this BTW.

1) Whats the optimal cluster size (safe). ive seen ppl use 64K other 16.. whats the differences?

2) i have to use a floppy and F6. i have downloaded the latest NV raid drivers from the DFI website. thats alright and fine.. However, when in windows. when i install the Nvidia Chipset Drivers do i install the Nvidia IDE(Storage) driver along with the SMBus and Ethernet?

anything else i should be looking out for.?

1) For STRIPE size many users choose 16 or 64, 16 has been shown to work the best as the default CLUSTER is 4kb. If you want to use 64 you should formate the drives to a 16kb cluster as a 4:1 relationship seems best. Personally I just use a 16kb stripe and forget about it.

2) Sounds like you have everything you need. You can go either way on installing the drivers, some people use it others don't, some people don't have problems, others do. Its kinda up in the air. I don't use it.

By that I mean leave it checked in the initial install windows, just say no when it specifically asks you ina popup box do you want to install this. I believe part of the drivers are needed whereas others aren't. Somebody else can probably clear this up a bit better...:)

Using a raid array and loading the drivers at F6 is FINE and puts the largest part of the SW/IDE package in and HAS to DO so. But like most have been told you are better off then to not load SW/IDE drivers when you load chipset drivers at any time later.

Ok the why, why, why? Because if you update the SW/IDE drivers and you "ever" try to do a repair install that requires another use of F6 to put the drivers back> Windows will balk and fall on its' face and you are stuck > unable to do a repair install because the SW/IDE updated drivers at ANY time you do such will not work with the Floppy Drivers anymore. And this problem gets worse with every new chispet driver release to date because I have checked.

Now you paid your monies for your rigs and you put yourselves in the position of the system intergrator and also the IT repair person and all that and you can do whatever you please with yore stuff. I seldom make many posts anymore because people don't pay much attention but this one will catch you if you are not looking. That is why without even really knowing it the "leave out" the SW/IDE drivers has been a good thing. Kept people from harm somewhere else and they did not even know it. So I just left the general opinion as it was because it worked. No reason to go and turn the boat upside down. But SP2 and Windows Installer have gotten way more picky and updating the SW/IDE drivers can create H*LL for a repair of windows or the like.
