Smoken Joe Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 No where dd they mention the airflow a vital component of heat dssapaton testing with out that the test s a joke.
THunDA Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I'd have to agree with Smoken Joe here.. I gave the review a quick read and didnt see them mention anything about active cooling.. Heat spreader or not you'd be careless to pump alot of volts into your ram without active cooling.. So imo it doesnt make the review very fair.. KaollaSu Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Great article HERE! I don't think Heat Spreaders are an efficient method of dispersing heat, but something is better than nothing. I was thinking about removing my heatspreaders, replacing them with RAMSinks and then getting some sort of active cooling solution. Edit: Actually my XP-90 + Panaflow gives nice airflow over the RAM. Also the 120mm Exaust Fan in my PSU pretty much eliminates any hot air pockets forming around the ram.
Luc@z Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Heh, I like the mushkin comment at the end.
Angry_Games Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 heatspreaders are basically useless and can actually cause thermal convection (as heat gets trapped between the memory IC and the inside of the heatspreader) but as all memory companies have told me...they aren't really there for heat...they are there to show company logos as well as hopefully stop ESD death

MLSman Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Could not have said it better myself. Simple physics....give me airflow. Luckily the way the Lanparty is designed, a fan blowing onto the heatsink and a good PS exhaust fan make for some great cooling. Only thing better would be active. NEOAethyr Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Ram spreaders don't do anything good for the oc'er, just like AG was saying. However, I've "heard" that using ram sinks, when done corectly, actually helps you out by a few mhz or so. I have yet to try, I don't have any bonding gel, I would'nt use tape anyways. Though I would make sure both the ram chips and ram sinks are lapped to a mirror finish ^^. You would'nt want to be trapping any heat. cd520 Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I have always wondered about this myself. Especially the way the heatspreaders are usually interfaced to the ram. However I also wondered with the spreaders in place if it helps protect the ram from RFI generated inside the case.
Smoken Joe Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Lab the ram chips? LOL Better be very carful there or you might be buying now ram. Personaly I woud not bother with more than a good fan directly on the ram ....like all Ram makers recomend if you are running higher volts. red930 Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Heatspreaders, besides the RF protection which has been stated earlier, will not assist heat dissipation without active cooling. Even with case fans - or in my case, a crossflow fan blowing accross the motherboard - direct air benefits chip cooling more than anything.
