Do I need a floppy drive?

Recommended Posts

Noob question:  I'm going to start building my rig tonight, but I don't have a floppy drive.

I plan to install windows XP SP2 on a SATA drive and I understand that you need to load the drivers off a floppy. I have 2 optical drives, is there a way I can load the drivers from one of them? Or is this even an issue with SP2?

For BIOS updates (if necessary) I thought I could just use Winflash. Is this a good idea?

I can run out now and pick up a floppy, if it's imperative, but it just seems like a waste of space...

If you're not going to install RAID then there is no need for the drivers. You can install WinXP on your SATA drive without the floppy drivers.

Thx for the quick follow up Ryn.

I'm not plannng to use RAID, so I guess I'm cool here.

WHat about Winflash for the BIOS? It seems a little dangerous to do it this way, but I haven't seen anyone posting horror stories about it.

Ryn's right.. if your not running raid you dont need to sata drivers..

To update your bios use tmod's bios cd.. there is a link in my sig..

I dont run a floppy either.. although when I reinstall I hook one up for the drivers because I use raid..
