Smefeman Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I orignially had a 520 watt OCZ Powerstream, but it was overheating and getting to temps around 50C. I RMAed and OCZ gave me a 600 watt Powerstream back and I'm still having the same problem. After a few minutes of Prime95 the PSU heats up. How does the mobo calculate the PSU temps? And what should I do?
SeanDude05 Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I assume your looking at the PWMIC temperature readout?

bexer Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 There are two possibilties.: 1. It's normal. 2. Inadequate cooling. What kind of case do you have? Is the PSU mounted above or below the mobo? If above, do you have some way of venting heat from the ram, cpu, etc other than through the PSU?
lowboy Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Gee that's the mobo mosfets and on load will run 50-70C which is normal if you want better temps put a Evercool VC-RE cooler on it.
Smefeman Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 It's in a Lian Li (http://www.xpcgear.com/lianlipc7bplus.html) and The PSU is above my Mobo. The thing is, the PSU pulls air from front to back, not from the bottom to the back so it doesn't vent the RAM or anything. My CPU is on watercooling so it does not really affect the air around there that much. (mostly ram heating up the air)
bexer Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I agree with lowboy and so does this. Funny how you got a kickbutt PSU out of it though. A quote from the link Yes, they can always be cooler The PWMIC and Chipset devices are designed to handle a lot of heat. 55 degrees on the chipset is very common. So is 50 on PWMIC. Edit:Added quote. Smefeman Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Oh, thanks I searched, but couldnt find it. Anyway, yes it is good I got some sweet stuff out of it.
SeanDude05 Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Those temperatures are fine.
soundx98 Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 PWMIC Temps and PSU "hotness" don't really corelate here The surrounding air temp has a huge effect on the PWMIC sensor. Sometimes the air just needs a lil stirring up to cool it off. Grab a fan and do a lil "McGiver" stuff to mount it. Can tell you a whole lot. It doesn't have to be pointed down on it. The Fan can blow across it effectively. I added a 3rd 120mm behind the perfed front on the Lian-Li. Great case Air Flow.
