Any ATI Tech's or Reps. on this board please read!!

Recommended Posts

i did a general search, but didn't find anything so here's my cry for help.

i'm looking for a ati tech or representative that might be able to get me a replacement fan for my 8500le 128mb agp card.

The fan has died (no longer spins) and the heatsink is un-removable. atleast i pried pretty hard while it was fresh out of the now crashing compaq of my mothers. i called the support line and the person i talked to was rather unhelpful.

the site is very very slow too, and due to the age of my card the fact that it might still be under warr. is improbable, considering the card is 4 years old.

i just want to purchase a new fan so i don't have to can my perfectly good card. i've gotten great benches out of it and would hate to do that.

to anyone else that reads this any suggestions would be great. i'm gonna take a pic of the card w/ fan removed so you all can understand what i'm talking about.

thanks again!!!

Why don't you get onto NEWEGG.COM and search for an aftermarket cooler for that video card and save yourself the trouble? I don't think this would be the place to ask about ATI products, this is a full support forum for DFI and some other manufactures like OCZ ram PSU, somewhat....good luck.....

yes, i know this, but maybe there's a ati support rep here... as u said and some other manufactur-ers.

and as i said, the heatsink won't come off.

Might just be cheaper to buy a new card...

Just a thought..you could even find something used since your mom probably doesn't need anything all that spectacular.

i stuck back in the oem 7500 32mb for now, but thanks, i'd just hate to throw away a perfectly good card because of a stupid 40mm fan.

i hope this isn't a indication of ati's support. the guy i talked to said to send it in for warranty service... i laughed and said i highly doubt it's still covered, and that i just wanted to buy a 3$ fan for 15$ (typical margin of price from repair)

I guess there are no push pins coming through the back of the card?Difficult to tell from the picture. Can you get a better close up of the sink front and back.

If it is stuck on with some sort of thermal pad have you tried heating it with a hairdryer?Or the other alternative is to put it in a anti static bag and pop it in the freezer(usually works with ram heatspreaders)

Hope that helps

Just saved the pic and blew it up to see better,I would try the hairdryer method first then if you get it off it looks like you could get an aftermarket cooler on there as it has the holes for pushpins, assuming you can get one with the correct dimensions.

heat gun worked. couldn't get the old thermal compound off so i just slapped the new cooler on it. tried rubbing alcohal (normal cheapy remover) AND Arcticlean. w/ a razor, so i just gave up. works fine for now. thanks to ati's wonderful tech support i will stay a dedicated nvidia fan. untill i find out how much there tech support sucks.

johnson thanks for the idea and the prodding to try it, i used my automotive grade heat gun at the high setting for about 45 seconds, took some pry-ing still, but after some patience i sent the stock sink flying about 4 feet, card works fine!!!

Woohoo glad it worked for you  .

Was going to mention a heat gun as we have them at work(motor trade as well you see) but not everyone can access one easily.

Must be some serious TIM compond they put on there lol.

At least you have it fixed now though.

You should be able to get a 40x40x10mm fan on the HS very easily with some 4-40 x 5/8" long screws. That is how I installed dozens of them.

all great idea's but i was looking to keep it as close to stock as possible, as i said i finally got it off there, thought about sanding/lapping the chip but it's not worth that much to me, and just the fact that it's working is enough to keep me happy w/ myself and not ati.

the first hour of noticing the problem, was spent placing orders to newegg and crazy pc, i'll be giving my mom my old volcano 11 w/ duct mod (if it fits), a pci card slot cooler (that i will put right next to the vid card), a zalman 92mm fan w/ bracket, new north and southbridge coolers, and my rig will finally get the mcp350 it's been waiting for about 9 months.
