NVIDIA 81.98 Released Today

Recommended Posts

Err well I think this is the 2nd release of these, not toally sure.

They have dates from 01/11/06...

Last month.

Meaning they are exactly the same as before, or they have updated inf's probably.

I never finished dl'ing 81.98 anyways apperently.

I do however have the original release of 82.12.

The new 82.12 is dated the same as 81.98, so in reality if there's a new driver, there's 2 of them.

Not to mention a quadro driver that was released some time ago, old ver, just like these.

I don't have the patience to re-dl these and compare checksums, I don't care either way.

Most likely they're update inf's and that's all.

What a lame way to support a new card or 2 :.

Instead of releasing a newer driver, they re-release an older one...

Anyways I agree, screw guru3d and there modified drivers, same goes for any oem.

No offence, just that I'd rather get it from nv themselves straight off there ftp.

Though once in a great great while I'll dl a beta that's not on nv's site, but I still prefer it being unmodded.

Anyways yippy do, not a new driver really.

Just the old stuff.

I'm waiting for this 85.xx or better driver to come out.

Using 82.12 myself.

These issues I know of so far:

Yumebench, working, but only one type of display mode type thingy, and only in 640x480.

VSync, not working on all aps even when forced.

This is both d3d and ogl.

I do admit I have'nt checked this in some time.

There was a few sli issues as well that I heard about after this release, so I'm not sure if those still exist.

OGL, dual core support.

Messed up so I've heard, runs in an inf loop on one of the cores, because of one certain instruction.

I can't remember to much about it, stumbled apon someone complaining about it once.

Probably still in affect.

App profiles...

God damn when is this thing ever going to work...

Just does'nt work at all.

Cpl bugs.

Sometimes adding another custom refresh rate exits out the cpl.

This is in the adv timing page thingy.

OGL blit mode for quadro cards reverts to auto or block mode, I can't remember which.

Fixing it would only be a matter of adding support for page flipping as an option to that one setting.

AGP queue depth reports incorrect setup.

255 is my card, 32 is my mobo, however one or both of these readback in the cpl as 0 right now.

Temps...

Make "C" default, right now "F" is default for the diode temp display in the cpl.

Fix the overlay and spanning page...

Major buggy, should be locked down so it cannot mess up correct settings.

The whole thing just about needs redoing, this one cpl page.

Color and sharpness boosts.

Reverts to non existent values, both of them, for any display that is active at that time when the cpl is opened.

This is ramdom, the values are, however it happens every single time, and to correct it you need to patch by hand and reboot!

Not cool.

Sharpness boost over a certain value lowers color sat...

Seems to be an odd issue, probably not a driver issue at all really.

Sharpness boost should be locked down to a max of:

%REG_BINARY%,05,00,00,00 ;About 1/16 of the full amount

This is the absolute max value before it starts screwing up the color.

;Prerender Limit

HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,00,00,00,00 ;0 Frames

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,01,00,00,00 ;1 Frame ,1st Limit Shuts off

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,02,00,00,00 ;2 Frames ,Barely Noticable Mouse Lag

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,0a,00,00,00 ;10 Frames ,Low Low ,High High

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,0b,00,00,00 ;11 Frames ,High Low ,Low High ,2nd Limit Shuts off

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,0f,00,00,00 ;15 Frames

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,19,00,00,00 ;25 Frames

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,1a,00,00,00 ;26 Frames

;HKR,,D3D_98764205, %REG_BINARY%,ff,00,00,00 ;255 Frames

Missing support for FFFF-FFFF ^^, or something like that I forgot.

I know it's supposed to go higher then 255, and it's just not doing it, ie it's broken.

Remove this probably:

;Enables Overlay Adjustment Controls, such as OverlayBrightness, OverlayContrast, OverlayHue, OverlaySaturation, etc.

;Small Comment: Was obsolete Long ago but is still around, I only set for piece of mind

;HKR,,OverlayColorControlEnable, %REG_BINARY%,00,00,00,00 ;Disabled (Default)

;HKR,,OverlayColorControlEnable, %REG_BINARY%,01,00,00,00 ;Enabled, Vertical Chroma Subsampling Enabled

HKR,,OverlayColorControlEnable, %REG_BINARY%,02,00,00,00 ;Enabled, Full Chroma Subsampling Enabled

Check this:

;HKR,,RMUserReqAGPRate, %REG_BINARY%,00,00,00,00 ;PCI

;HKR,,RMUserReqAGPRate, %REG_BINARY%,04,00,00,00 ;AGP 4X

;HKR,,RMUserReqAGPRate, %REG_BINARY%,08,00,00,00 ;AGP 8X?

HKR,,RMUserReqAGPRate, %REG_BINARY%,40,00,00,00 ;AGP 64X?

If correct, fix the cpl to report the values correctly., and so it does'nt replace it.

Fix this for newer cards after the ti4600 and q980xgl...

I mean, it worked fine before, now it does'nt work at all, not cool.

;Latency Timer

HKR,,PciLatencyTimerControl, %REG_DWORD%,00 ;nVidia Compatibility, 0 Clks

;HKR,,PciLatencyTimerControl, %REG_DWORD%,40 ;VIA Compatibility, 64 Clks

;HKR,,PciLatencyTimerControl, %REG_DWORD%,f8 ;Default, 248 Clks

I could go on and on probably :.

I'm sure I'm boring you guys though.

I wish nv would get off there butts on certain things but hey I guess, whatever.

Uninstall the driver manually from the device manager.

Then afterwards uninstall the driver using the add/remove programs.

Then reboot...

Afterwards, install with the device manager or the pnp manager.

This works as long as you have the device class installed.

Meaning it allways works unless you remove a critical part of windows.

Win2k is fussy though.

However xp and above is alot easier to work with.

Just keep that in mind.

The above should work.

You may have to have the pnp manager auto detect the card's driver, this is needed in 2k.

To some extent, you can still control this somewhat.

However in xp and above, you can manually pick the driver straight out.

Good luck.

Oh don't forget to check the driver for a valid device id of the card/cards that you're trying to install.

There may be a few odds and ends to all of that but I don't have sli, so I'm not sure if the device amount thingy even does anything.

Anyways just make sure your device id is in the inf ^^.

If you need more help I can post the registry sections where you would del.

I would'nt post the very few class id's though.

I would also post the device class registry entries.

That's only if you still have problems.

back again with no installed drivers

this is what i did.

uninstalled drivers from device manager and then from add/remove.

rebooted and disabled av programme.

reinstalled 81.98 drivers and rebooted.

pc boots then bluescreens and then restarts.

then it goes to screen for choice of starting - safe mode etc.

the only way i can get it to load is by choosing Last know good configeration.

once loaded it then tells me that both cards have no Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

is there something i am missing.everytime i load previous drivers there is no problem

Hmm that is strange.

Does'nt seem to be an install issue though, since you're able to install previous drivers without probs.

Those legend cards...

Are you up to date on there bios'es?

I believe the latest is at least 02.75 or something like that.

Perhaps this, or later/ or earlyier ver of the bios may help.

Then again if you can do sli right now with a diffrent driver, then that's probably not a huge issue.

Ok anyways if the 81.98 is'nt working out for you, for some strange reason..., try out the 82.12 driver.

I was about to reccomend it anyways, it's a better driver then 81.98 I think.

Tiny bit faster.

ftp://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/82.12

If you can't use 82.12, try this one:

ftp://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/81.85_whql

Stick with the latest 8x.xx driver you can use for now.

Meaning 81.84+.

Nv has both d3d and ogl working to a somewhat decent extent right now so it's best to keep up :).

When they mess something up, like when they redo d3d or ogl, it's best to stay away.

They do this alot though, seems to be once per generation.

I think maybe the only time they did'nt mess something up big time is when they started the 6x.xx drivers...

I'm sure there must be some reason your cards are bsod'ing though...

What kind of bsod is it btw?

not sure what bsod is.

and i have never changed the bios of a graphics card before.the reason i was trying to load the latest driver is because i ran 3dmark06 and was told that 81.98 was the only whql driver that is approved by futuremark for this benchmark
