Opteron 144 Overclock Question?

I recently built an A64 rig (Check my sig).

 

I have managed to get my Opteron 144 prime stable for 12 hours @ 2.85Ghz (317x9, 1.55v) & my RAM running with a 9/10 ratio (286Mhz 2.5-4-4-7, 2.9v). LDT is 3, all other voltages are at stock settings.

 

When i try to run any of the 3DMark benchmarks (2001, 03, 05, 06) it crashes my pc. I can only get 3DMark to complete when dropping my clockspeed down to 2.7Ghz (300x9, 1.5v). I can accept that 2.7Ghz is a pretty good overclock from a cpu that only cost me £110 but its annoying me that i cant run it at 2.85Ghz. Has anybody got any ideas? Thanks.

When u say prime stable in prime, which test did u run?

You should pick the first one "Small someting"

 

Have u tried memtest and superpi? if they are stable?

 

Otherweise i would say that 2.7 is a very good clock for that cpu, i only got my 144 up to 2.6 :S bad stepping i suppose

Any time you get a 900 MHz OC, you have a super OC. Great Job. On "AIR" no less. I think you can bragg a little.

 

Something you might try is tweak your tref. I've had a lot of luck lately with that. I set it to auto and use the A64 Tweaker to find out what the auto is set to and then refer to the charts and select about three possibles and try each. I've got good results. I was in doldrums a while agao on this little FX at 3.040GHz and tried it out and stable and up another 120 MHz and still not dead.

My RAM is stable with memtest until 290Mhz, but i found that that wasnt the best indicator of stability.

 

SuperPI passes fine.

 

I havent tried prime95 with the first test, i only ran the blend test (CPU & RAM), it lasted 12 hours with that. I know i should be greatful for getting as far as 2.7Ghz but i just cant help but think that i can squeeze out another 100mhz or so.

Small FFTs

 

FFT stands for Fast Fourier Transform and is an algorithm to compute discrete Fourier transforms for a sequence of n complex numbers (groan, more math – I’m outta here). The Small FFT test loads neatly into your L2 cache so it tests primarily your CPU. Ram will generally only be affected whenever more data has to be fetched into the L2 cache. The small FFT test is good if you’re just looking to give your CPU a good burn in or test your cooling sub-system out. This test will heat up your CPU, so watch the temps.

 

In-Place Large FFTs

 

Due to the nature of in-place FFTs, they do a lot of moving data and swapping to and from memory during the computations. So this test gives your CPU a work out along with some of your RAM. It will also heat up your CPU quickly so watch your temps closely.

 

Blend

 

Blend is my favorite since it works out everything. Blend will use small and large in-place FFTs so everything (CPU and RAM) gets a nice work out. Unless you use something like memtest to check out your memory, I recommend the Blend setting. Blend, like the other test, does indeed give your system a work out and the temps rise rapidly. Not to be repetitive, but keep an eye on your temps lest the toasty aroma of a burned CPU begins to fill your nostrils.

I have managed to get my rig to pass all of the 3dmark benches now, running @ 2754Mhz.

 

HTT - 306

LDT - 3

Multi - 9

Vcore - 1.55

CPU/RAM Ratio - 9/10

2.5-4-7-4-11

Vdimm 2.9

 

I only got an xtra 1pt in 2006, and about 30 or so in 2005 so i am tempted to leave my rig running at 2.7ghz if its more stable.

 

I still cant understand why my PC managed to run prime (BLEND TEST) for 12hrs @ 2.85ghz and yet i can only run 3dmark @ 2.75ghz.
